Channing Of The Northwest
''Channing of the Northwest'' is a 1922 American silent drama film directed by Ralph Ince and starring Eugene O'Brien, Gladden James and Norma Shearer.Jacobs & Braum p. 68 Plot As described in a film magazine, Channing (O'Brien), a member of the Northwest Mounted Police and known to his fellows as "the Duke," is sent to a town to watch a gang of outlaws that have crossed the border from the United States and are suspected in the shooting of a Northwest Mounted Policeman. He meets Cicily Varden (Naldi) who is engaged to a youth living with the family. This young man has fallen in with the gang at McCook's saloon, and in an altercation shoots a man. The young woman attempts to hide him when Channing enters the cabin. Because her fiancé has broken his promise not to go to McCook's, she breaks her engagement with him and declares her love for Channing. Ralph Ince
Ralph Waldo Ince (January 16, 1887 – April 10, 1937) was an American pioneer film actor, director and screenwriter whose career began near the dawn of the silent film, silent film era. Ralph Ince was the brother of John Ince (actor), John E. Ince and Thomas H. Ince. Biography Ralph Ince was born on January 16, 1887, in Boston, the youngest of three sons and a daughter raised by English immigrants, John and Emma Ince. Sometime after his birth Ince moved to Manhattan where his entire family was engaged in theater work; his father as a musical agent and mother, sister Bertha and brothers, John and Thomas as actors. Ralph Ince studied art with cartoonist Dan McCarthy and for a while worked as a newspaper cartoonist for the New York World and later magazine illustrator for the New York Mirror and The Evening Telegram. North-West Mounted Police
The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) was a Canadian paramilitary police force, established in 1873, to maintain order in the new Canadian North-West Territories (NWT) following the 1870 transfer of Rupert's Land and North-Western Territory to Canada from the Hudson's Bay Company, the Red River Rebellion and in response to lawlessness, demonstrated by the subsequent Cypress Hills Massacre and fears of United States military intervention. The NWMP combined military, police and judicial functions along similar lines to the Royal Irish Constabulary. A small, mobile police force was chosen to reduce potential for tensions with the United States and First Nations in Canada, First Nations.
