In most telecommunications organizations, a virtual channel is a method of remapping the ''program number'' as used in H.222 Program Association Tables and Program Mapping Tables to a channel number that can be entered as digits on a receiver's remote control. Often, virtual channels are implemented in digital television to help users select channels easily and in general to ease the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. Assigning virtual channels is most common where TV stations were colloquially named after the RF channel they were transmitting on ("Channel 6 Springfield"), as was common in North America during the analogue TV era. CHLT-DT (channel 7) is a television station in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, broadcasting the French-language network TVA. Owned and operated by Groupe TVA, the station maintains studios on Rue King Ouest (near Route 112) in Sherbrooke and a transmitter in Orford, Quebec. History The station went on the air for the first time on August 12, 1956. It was owned by , the city's major newspaper, along with CHLT radio. Like most television stations in Quebec, it was a dual affiliate of both CBC and Radio-Canada. Owned and operated by network parent Corus Entertainment, the station maintains studios inside the Royal Bank building at the corner of 7 Street South and 4 Avenue South in Downtown Lethbridge, and its transmitter is located near Highway 25 and Range Road 221, just outside the city. CKRT-DT, virtual and VHF digital channel 7, was an Ici Radio-Canada Télé- affiliated station licensed to Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, Canada. Owned by the Simard family and their company, Télé Inter-Rives, it was sister to Noovo affiliate CFTF-DT and TVA affiliate CIMT-DT. This arrangement made the station part of a so-called " triple-stick"—three stations owned by a single company. The three stations shared studios on Rue de la Chute and Rue Frontenac in Rivière-du-Loup; CKRT-DT's transmitter was located near Chemin du Mont Bleu in Picard. CKRT went off the air for the last time on August 31, 2021; it was the last remaining privately-owned Radio-Canada affiliate.
