Chancellor (education)
A chancellor is a leader of a college or university, usually either the executive or ceremonial head of the university or of a university campus within a university system. In most Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth and former Commonwealth nations, the chancellor is usually a ceremonial non-resident head of the university. In such institutions, the chief executive of a university is the vice-chancellor, who may carry an additional title such as ''president'' (e.g. "president & vice-chancellor"). The chancellor may serve as chairperson of the governing body; if not, this duty is often held by a chairperson who may be known as a pro-chancellor. Peter Savaryn
Peter Savaryn (September 17, 1926 – April 6, 2017) was a Ukrainian-born Canadian lawyer. During World War II, he belonged to the SS Division Galicia. Savaryn was among the approximately 2,000 Waffen-SS Galicia fighters allowed to immigrate to Canada. Savaryn arrived in Canada in 1949, and attended the University of Alberta (B.A. 1955, LLB 1956). Savaryn was a partner in the law firm Savaryn & Savaryn. He was married to Olga (Olya) Prystajecky (1951) with whom he had three children. He served as Chancellor of the University of Alberta from 1982 to 1986 and was involved with the university Board of Governors and Senate. Savaryn was the president of the Ukrainian World Congress, at the time called the World Congress of Free Ukrainians, from 1983 to 1988. He was also president of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta and vice-president of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Linda Jean Hughes, (born September 27, 1950) is a Canadian newspaper publisher. She served as Chancellor of the University of Alberta from 2008 to 2012. Hughes was educated at the University of Victoria (1972 Honours BA). Lou Hyndman
Louis Davies Hyndman, (July 1, 1935 – November 24, 2013) was a Canadian lawyer and politician from Alberta. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for 19 years and was a member of Premier Peter Lougheed and Don Getty's Cabinets. Hyndman was named the 15th Chancellor of the University of Alberta on June 10, 1994. From 1993 through 1996, he was Honorary Captain of the 4th Destroyer Squadron, Royal Canadian Navy. Alastair Auld Mactaggart (March 11, 1928 July 3, 2017), known as Sandy Mactaggart or Sandy Auld Mactaggart, was a Scottish-born Canadian educator and philanthropist. Mactaggart was born in Glasgow. After being evacuated to Canada during World War II in the late 1930s, he attended schooling at Lakefield College School (Ontario) and at Choate Rosemary Hall (Connecticut).
