Cedar Grove Cemetery (University Of Notre Dame)
Cedar Grove Cemetery is a cemetery on the University of Notre Dame campus in Notre Dame, Indiana. The 22-acre cemetery opened in . History The cemetery was established in 1843 by Rev. Edward Sorin, soon after he founded the university. Brothers of the congregation also established a mortuary, one of the first in Indiana. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries it was a Catholic cemetery open to the public. In 1977 ownership was transferred from the Congregation to the university. At this time it became a private cemetery, and burials were reserved for Notre Dame faculty, staff, and retirees with the requisite years of service. Despite recent expansions that brought it to 22 acres, space is very limited. In response to persistent requests, in recent years it has been opened to Notre Dame alumni with the creation of four mausoleums complexes. Notre Dame is a census-designated place and unincorporated community north of the city of South Bend in St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Edward Sorin
Edward Frederick Sorin (French: Édouard Sorin), C.S.C. (February 6, 1814October 31, 1893) was a French-born priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross and the founder of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and of St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Early life Edouard Frédéric Sorin was born on February 6, 1814, at in Ahuillé, near Laval, France to Julian Sorin de la Gaulterie and Marie Anne Louise Gresland de la Margalerie. He was the seventh of nine children, and he was born into a well-off middle-class family and grew up in a three-story manor home (the ''chateau de la Roche'') with seven acres of land. His family was religious and had sheltered two non-juring priests during the persecutions of the French Revolution. He received an early education in the home, in the local village school, and by the local parish priest.
