Cedar (Doves Album)
''Cedar'' is the debut EP from Doves, the first release from the band after the dissolution of their previous incarnation, Sub Sub. It was self-released on the band's Casino Records label (co-founded by Rob Gretton) on 9 November 1998 on limited 10" vinyl. The epic track "The Cedar Room" later became the band's first single from their debut album '' Lost Souls''. Following the release of the ''Cedar EP'', Doves briefly joined Badly Drawn Boy as his backing band. Doves (band)
Doves are an English indie rock band, formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire in 1998. The band is composed of singer and bassist Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers, guitarist Jez Williams, Jez and drummer Andy Williams (Doves), Andy Williams. The band released six studio albums between 2000 and 2025, three of which reached #1 on the UK album charts. A compilation album, ''The Places Between: The Best of Doves'', was released in April 2010. Doves went on hiatus in 2010. During this time, Goodwin released his first solo album, ''Odludek'' (2014), while the Williams brothers regrouped as Black Rivers. In December 2018, Doves announced they were ending their hiatus by performing for the Teenage Cancer Trust at London's Royal Albert Hall on 29 March 2019. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Sub Sub
Sub Sub were an English dance music, dance act from Handforth, Cheshire composed of Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Andy Williams (Doves), Andy and Jez Williams. The threesome met at school in 1985 and became regulars at The Haçienda while composing their own material together. They had an underground Gramophone record, 12" single (music), single ("Space Face" in 1991) and moderate commercial success in the early 1990s on Rob Gretton's label Rob's Records, including the single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" (featuring guest vocalist Melanie Williams) which reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The trio's only album, ''Full Fathom Five'', was released in September 1994. Rob Gretton
Robert Leo Gretton (15 January 1953 – 15 May 1999) was the manager of Joy Division and New Order. He was partner in and co-director of Factory Records and a founding partner of The Haçienda. For ten years until his death in 1999, Gretton ran his own label, Rob's Records. Life and career In 1977, Gretton became a leading figure in the Manchester punk scene with his involvement with Slaughter & the Dogs. He was a DJ in Rafters club and manager of The Panik. Gretton's involvement with the Manchester scene began when he contributed £200 to co-finance Slaughter & the Dogs' first single, the punk classic "Cranked Up Really High". In 1978, Gretton saw Joy Division perform at the Stiff Test/Chiswick Challenge battle of the bands in Manchester City centre. ''Lost Souls'' is the debut studio album by British indie rock band Doves, released by Heavenly Recordings on 3 April 2000. The album was recorded over a period of several years, following the dissolution of Doves' original musical incarnation as house music act Sub Sub. ''Lost Souls'' was a moderate chart success in the UK; the album peaked at number 16, while the three singles taken from the album charted in the Top 40. ''Lost Souls'' was considered by many to be the best debut album by a British act since Oasis' '' Definitely Maybe''. Badly Drawn Boy
Damon Michael Gough (born 2 October 1969), known by the stage name Badly Drawn Boy, is an English indie singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Gough chose his stage name from a character in the show '' The Magic Ball'', which he saw on TV at a party in Trafford, Greater Manchester, in 1995. Before he thought of using this name he made some business cards, each one unique, with a printed picture of a drawing by his nephew and a small collage by Gough. At the Generation X bar in Manchester, Gough met Andy Votel, who was DJing that night. Gough was there to attend friends Scott Abraham and Damon Hayhurst's contributions to an exhibition by the Space Monkey Clothing Company. Andy Williams (Doves)
Andrew Sebastian Williams (born 18 February 1970) is a British musician who is the drummer and vocalist of Doves. He is the son of noted modernist architect Desmond Williams and the twin brother of bandmate Jez. Andy and Jez were born in Manchester, England and have a brother Dominic and sister Sarah. Before forming Doves, the band's three members were a dance-club music trio called Sub Sub. While Doves were on a hiatus between 2010 and 2020, Andy and Jez Williams formed a side project called Black Rivers, releasing a self-titled album in February 2015. Jimi Goodwin
Jamie Francis Alexander Goodwin (born 28 May 1970) is a British musician who is the bassist, vocalist and guitarist for Doves. Before their incarnation as Doves, the three members were in a house music group, Sub Sub. Goodwin is best known as the lead singer, bassist, and guitarist for Doves, but in songs like " Here It Comes", he is known for swapping positions with drummer Andy Williams and taking over as drummer. During live performances of " There Goes the Fear", he is known for adding an extra drum solo to the end of the song. Goodwin is left-handed, but whilst playing live uses a right-handed bass strung in the normal tuning and flipped upside down. Goodwin is a keen supporter of Manchester City, and performed live at Maine Road following the last league game played there.
