Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur (; English language, English: Cathedral of the Sacred Heart) is a modern Catholic cathedral in Port Vila, Vanuatu. It is the seat of the Diocese of Port-Vila. Port Vila ( ; ), or simply Vila (), is the capital of Vanuatu and its largest city. It is on the island of Efate, in Shefa Province. The population was 49,034 as of the 2020 census. In 2020, the population of Port Vila formed 16.3% of the country's population. Located on the east coast of the island of Efate, Port Vila is the economic and commercial centre of Vanuatu. The mayor is Jenny Regenvanu of the Land and Justice Party, the first woman to hold the position, elected in August 2024. Her deputy was Marie Louise Milne, of the Green Confederation, until the seat was vacated in January 2025. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila (Latin: ''Dioecesis Portus Vilensis''; French: ''Diocèse de Port-Vila'') in Vanuatu is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nouméa. History The first Catholic mission in Vanuatu was started in 1887 at Mele on Efate, by the Marist Father Le Forestier, three other Marist priests and a brother. The greatest growth of Catholic converts took place in the north, where the French influence was strong. This was especially true in Espiritu Santo and Malekula. Jean Bosco Baremes, SM, (born August 30, 1960 in Han, Carteret Islands, Papua New Guinea) is a Papua New Guinean clergyman and bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila. After his ordination in 1987, Baremes studied in the US and served in New Caledonia and Fiji. He was appointed bishop in 2009. The Catholic Church in Vanuatu is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Catholics constitute 13% of the population of Vanuatu in 2022. The church is organized into one diocese based in the capital of Port Vila. The diocese is a member of the Pacific Bishops Conference. History The first ever mass in Oceania was performed on May 14, 1606, when Spanish explorer Pedro de Quiros landed on Espiritu Santo with four priests and eight brothers, some of which were Franciscans and St John of God, and celebrated Pentecost.
