Katherine Burton
Katherine Burton (born Katherine Kurz; 18 Mar 1887, in Lakewood, near Cleveland, Ohio; died September 22, 1969) was an American Roman Catholic convert who became renowned in her post-conversion years as a religious biographer. She was also a prominent social activist campaigning for family rights, a poet and a short story writer. She was the first woman columnist in a Catholic journal. Early years Burton was originally the daughter of a German Lutheran family who rarely went to church. Apart from Sunday School it is thought that in her childhood she had little interest in religion. She graduated about 1906 from Western Reserve College. At that time she considered herself an agnostic and never attended religious services, even after her marriage (6 Aug. 1910) to Harry Payne Burton, a journalist who had originally intended to become an Episcopal priest. Catharine Burton
Catharine Burton (1668–1714), also known by her religious name Mary Xaveria of the Angels, was an English Discalced Carmelite. Life She was born at Beyton, Suffolk, near Bury St Edmunds, on 4 November 1668 as one of ten children of Thomas and Mary Burton. After his wife died, Thomas Burton brought up the children alone, instead of entering a monastery as a laybrother as he had intended to do. Two of Catharine's sisters became nuns also (one of them entering the same Carmelite convent as Catharine), one of her brothers a priest. Feeling called to the monastic life, Burton went to the Spanish Netherlands. There she entered the monastery of the English Discalced Carmelite nuns at Antwerp in 1693. She chose the religious name ''Mary Xaveria of the Angels'' and made her religious profession in 1694.
