Catalina Affair
The Catalina affair () was a military confrontation and Cold War-era diplomatic crisis in June 1952, in which Soviet Air Force fighter jets shot down two Swedish aircraft over international waters in the Baltic Sea. The first aircraft to be shot down was an unarmed Swedish Air Force Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Tp 79, a derivative of the Douglas DC-3, carrying out radio and radar signals intelligence-gathering for the National Defence Radio Establishment (Sweden), National Defence Radio Establishment (''Försvarets radioanstalt'', FRA). None of the crew of eight survived. The second aircraft to be shot down was a Swedish Air Force Tp 47, a Consolidated PBY Catalina, Catalina flying boat, involved in the search and rescue operation for the missing DC-3. Svea Air Corps
Svea Air Corps (), also F 8 Barkarby, or simply F 8, is a former Swedish Air Force air corps wing with the main base located in Barkarby just north of the capital Stockholm on the east coast. History The meadows in the area were used since 1913 for basic flying training. From 1919 until 1936 the airport was a permanent international airport until the commercial traffic was transferred to the newly built Stockholm-Bromma Airport with paved runways. From 1926 until 1938 the airfield was also used for evaluation of new aircraft for the Swedish Air Force. Units from other wings were also stationed here for air defense of the capital Stockholm. In 1936, the decision was made to set up a permanent fighter air wing. Three squadrons of Gloster Gladiator, J 8 were initially detached to the Västmanland Wing (F 1) but moved to Barkarby on October 1, 1938. The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (; USAF/DoD designation: Type 14; NATO reporting name: Fagot) is a jet fighter aircraft developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich for the Soviet Union. It differs from a floatplane in having a fuselage that is purpose-designed for flotation, while floatplanes rely on fuselage-mounted floats for buoyancy. Hanau Army Airfield
Hanau Army Airfield is a former military airfield located in Langendiebach, part of the municipality of Erlensee, some north-northeast of Hanau in Hesse, Germany. History Even before the construction of the airfield 1937–39, Langendiebach was used for military purposes. During the Roman period (100-260 AD) Castrum Rückingen cohort and small Castrum Langendiebach was built to secure the Upper Germanic Limes border. A total of 500 legionaries were stationed from Dalmatia. Parts of these constructions can still be found. The construction of the airfield, in the meadows of Langendiebach, goes back to an accident. In summer 1936 the Air Force had to hold Military exercises. In an air exercise, machines were involved from the Ju-TYPE 52nd. Orly Air Base
Orly Air Base was a United States Air Force Facility during the early part of the Cold War, located at Aéroport de Paris-Orly, south of Paris, France. The American Air Base was located on the north side of the airport, in an area east of the current-day Val-de-Marne/Essonne. The facility was first developed as a military airfield by the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. With the end of the war, in 1920 it was eventually developed into a civil airport. After the 1940 Battle of France, the occupying German Luftwaffe seized the facility and used it as a military airfield.
