Carrefour (film)
''Crossroads'' (French: ''Carrefour'') is a 1938 French mystery drama film directed by Curtis Bernhardt and starring Charles Vanel, Jules Berry and Suzy Prim. It inspired two English-language remakes, the 1940 British film '' Dead Man's Shoes'' and Hollywood's ''Crossroads'' in 1942.Barton p.128 It was shot at the Billancourt Studios in Paris and on location in the city. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jean d'Eaubonne and Raymond Gabutti. Synopsis A wealthy industrialist is accused in court of being in reality a petty criminal who deserted from the French Army twenty years before during the First World War. Curtis Bernhardt
Curtis Bernhardt (15 April 1899 – 22 February 1981) was a German film director born in Worms, Germany, under the name Kurt Bernhardt. Career He trained as an actor in Germany, and performed on the stage, before starting as a film director in 1924, with ''Nameless Heroes (film), Nameless Heroes''. Other films include ''A Stolen Life (1946 film), A Stolen Life'' (1946) and ''Sirocco (film), Sirocco'' (1951). Bernhardt made films in Germany from 1925 until 1933, when he was forced to flee the Third Reich — which briefly had him arrested — because he was Jews, Jewish. Bernhardt directed films in France and England before moving on to Cinema of the United States, Hollywood to work for Warner Brothers in 1940. Jean Claudio (28 March 1927 – 11 January 1992) was a French actor. Biography He began his acting career in the cinema at the age of ten, playing the role of the Tsarevich, son of Tsar Nicolas II in The Imperial Tragedy. In 1938, at the age of eleven, he played Mathieu Sorgue in Les Disparus de Saint-Agil by Christian-Jaque. He entered the Paris Conservatory, where, at fourteen, he was given the role of Chérubin in Le Mariage de Figaro. He has since had an international career, particularly in the United States.
