Carlton Hotel, Beirut
The Carlton Hotel was a luxury hotel in Beirut, Lebanon. The Carlton was built in 1955 on Avenue General de Gaulle, the southern part of the Corniche Beirut, offering 140 rooms with uninterrupted view to the Mediterranean, but it was demolished in 2008, causing a lot of criticism and triggering a renewed consciousness about the need to preserve modern heritage. The Carlton Hotel was designed by Karol Schayer, a Polish architect who came to Beirut during the Second World War and Lebanese architects Makdisi, Shayer, and Adib. It quickly attracted a cosmopolitan clientele, and its swimming pool and gardens overlooking the Corniche compensated from its distance from the shoreline. The hotel was not only a popular tourist resort and one of the symbols of the hedonistic pre-war years, but it was also a popular destination for the LGBTQ community in Beirut. Carlton Hotel (Johannesburg)
The Carlton Hotel is a historic hotel in the Johannesburg CBD, Central Business District of Johannesburg, South Africa. It opened in 1972 as part of the enormous Carlton Centre complex, and has been closed since 1998. Its closure has been attributed to the decay of the Central Business District, resulting in a severe crime wave and the flight of the city's corporate offices north to areas like Sandton and Rosebank. This created a plethora of vacant rooms that were unable to be filled. The main hotel tower was closed in December 1997. History First Carlton Hotel The first Carlton Hotel was located two blocks away, at the corner of Eloff Street & Commissioner Street. Conceived in 1895 by mining magnate Barney Barnato as a huge, world-class luxury hotel with a theater, construction was finally begun by Barnato's heirs in 1903, without the theater, after delays caused by Barnato's death and the Boer War. Carlton Hotel, London
The Carlton Hotel was a luxury hotel in London that operated from 1899 to 1940. It was designed by the architect Charles J. Phipps, C. J. Phipps as part of a larger development that included the rebuilding of Her Majesty's Theatre, which is adjacent to the hotel site. The Carlton was originally run by the Swiss hotelier César Ritz, with Auguste Escoffier as the head chef. In its early days it was one of London's most fashionable hotels and drew some customers away from the Savoy Hotel, which Ritz and Escoffier had previously managed. The hotel lost some of its prestige after Ritz retired, but continued to trade profitably until it was badly damaged by German bombing in 1940. The British government requisitioned the building in 1942. After the Second World War the shareholders of the hotel sold the lease of the site, and the surviving parts of the building were demolished in 1957–58. The site is now occupied by the 17-storey block of the High Commission of New Zealand, London, ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
