Cardo
A cardo (plural ''cardines'') was a north–south street in Ancient Roman cities and military camps as an integral component of city planning. The cardo maximus, or most often the ''cardo'', was the main or central north–south-oriented street. Etymology The ''cardo maximus'' was the "hinge" or axis of the city, derived from Greek καρδίᾱ, kardia ("heart") and as such was generally lined with shops and vendors, and served as a hub of economic life. Most Roman cities also had a Decumanus Maximus, an east–west street that served as a secondary main street. Due to varying geography, in some cities the Decumanus is the main street and the Cardo is secondary, but in general the Cardo maximus served as the primary street. The Forum was normally located at, or close to, the intersection of the Decumanus and the Cardo. Examples Apamea, Syria The Cardo Maximus of Apamea, Syria ran through the centre of the city directly from North to South, linked the principal gates of ... The Cardo (Jerusalem)
The Cardo was a central north-south oriented thoroughfare in Jerusalem during the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. Together with the east-west oriented Decumanus, it reflects typical Roman city planning. The term "''Cardo''" derives from the Latin word for "hinge," referring to role as the main north–south axis in Roman cities. The Cardo originated during the Late Roman period, beginning at the Damascus Gate it split into two main branches, the eastern Cardo following the route of the modern day "HaGai" street and the western Cardo which ascended towards Mount Zion and the modern day Jewish Quarter. Both branches run from the north and extend southwards. This initial construction phase occurred when Jerusalem was known as Aelia Capitolina, following the Roman reconstruction of the city after its destruction in 70 CE. The Cardo was extended during the Byzantine period, particularly in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian. This extension reached the southern parts of the ci ... Cardo Polymer
Cardo polymers are a sub group of polymers where ring structures are pendent to the polymer backbone. The backbone carbons bonded to the pendent ring structures are quaternary centers. As such, the cyclic side group lies perpendicular to the plane of the extended (all trans conformation) polymer chain. These side rings are bulky structures which sterically hinder rotation of the backbone bonds; they also disrupt chain packing and thus create greater free volume than found in conventional polymer structures. The rotational restrictions placed on the polymer backbone increase the value of the characteristic ratio, leading to what is referred to as a "rigid" or "stiff" backbone. The sterically driven large rotational potential produces a high glass transition temperature and the disrupted packing yields comparatively high values for gas and other small molecule solubilities in these polymers.Vasilii V. Bembo
Bembo is a serif typeface created by the British branch of the Monotype Corporation in 1928–1929 and most commonly used for body text. It is a member of the " old-style" of serif fonts, with its regular or roman style based on a design cut around 1495 by Francesco Griffo for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, sometimes generically called the "Aldine roman". Bembo is named for Manutius's first publication with it, a small 1496 book by the poet and cleric Pietro Bembo. The italic is based on work by Giovanni Antonio Tagliente, a calligrapher who worked as a printer in the 1520s, after the time of Manutius and Griffo. Monotype created Bembo during a period of renewed interest in the printing of the Italian Renaissance, under the influence of Monotype executive and printing historian Stanley Morison. It followed a previous more faithful revival of Manutius's work, Poliphilus, whose reputation it largely eclipsed. Monotype also created a second, much more eccentric italic for ...
