Cardinals Created By John XXIII
Pope John XXIII () created 52 Cardinal (Catholicism), cardinals in five College of Cardinals, consistories. Beginning at his first consistory, he expanded the size of the College beyond the limit of seventy established in 1586 and on several occasions announced that further increases should be expected. It rose to 88 in January 1961. He named three additional cardinals ''in pectore'', that is, secretly, but did not reveal their names before his death. In 1962 he initiated the rule that all cardinals should be bishops. He consecrated the twelve non-bishop members of the College himself in April. He created one cardinal who later became pope, Pope Paul VI. Américo de Deus Rodrigues Thomaz (; 19 November 1894 – 18 September 1987) was a Portuguese Navy Officer (armed forces), officer and politician who served as the 13th president of Portugal from 1958 to Carnation Revolution, 1974. José Garibi Y Rivera
José Mariano Garibi y Rivera (30 January 1889 in Guadalajara – 27 May 1972 in Guadalajara), was a cardinal and Archbishop of Guadalajara. He was the first Mexican cardinal of the Catholic Church. Education Garibi was educated at the Colegio del Señor San José (primary education) and the Seminary of Guadalajara from 1900 to 1906, where he studied the humanities, sciences, Latin, Greek, philosophy and theology. He entered the novitiate of the Order of Friars Minor at Zapopan, Jalisco, in 1906, but left at the end of the novitiate year after he decided not to join the Order. He then returned to the Seminary of Guadalajara to pursue studies for the priesthood. Amleto Giovanni Cicognani
Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (24 February 1883 – 17 December 1973) was an Italian Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He served as Vatican Secretary of State from 1961 to 1969, and Dean of the College of Cardinals from 1972 until his death. Cicognani was elevated to the cardinalate in 1958. His brother, Gaetano Cicognani, was also a cardinal. To date they are the last pair of brothers to serve together in the College of Cardinals. An apostolic nuncio (; also known as a papal nuncio or simply as a nuncio) is an ecclesiastical diplomat, serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or to an international organization. A nuncio is appointed by and represents the Holy See, and is the head of the diplomatic mission, called an apostolic nunciature, which is the equivalent of an embassy. The Holy See is legally distinct from the Vatican City or the Catholic Church. In modern times, a nuncio is usually an Archbishop. Fernando Cento (10 August 1883 – 13 January 1973) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church who served as Major Penitentiary of Apostolic Penitentiary. Early life Fernando Cento was born in Pollenza, Italy. His parents were Evaristo Cento and his second wife, Ermelinda Andreani. He had a half-sister, Rosa, and a brother, Vincenzo. He was educated at the Seminary of Macerata from 1893 to 1905, where he was taught philosophy and theology, and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he studied canon law. Giuseppe Fietta
Giuseppe Fietta (6 November 1883 – 1 October 1960) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1924 to 1958, including a stint as Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina from 1936 to 1953. He was made a cardinal in 1958. Biography Born in Ivrea, Piedmont, Giuseppe Fietta studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained to the priesthood on 4 November 1906. He then served as private secretary to the bishop of Alghero, Oristano, and Cagliari until 1923. Fietta was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on 9 May 1920 and served as the rector of the Seminary of Alghero and a canon of its cathedral chapter from 1923 to 1924.
