Seven Deadly Sins
The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, is a grouping and classification of vices within Christian teachings. Although they are not directly mentioned in the Bible, there are parallels with the seven things God is said to hate in the Book of Proverbs. Behaviours or habits are classified under this category if they directly give rise to other immoralities. According to the standard list, they are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth, which are contrary to the seven capital virtues. This classification originated with the Desert Fathers, especially Evagrius Ponticus. Evagrius' pupil John Cassian with his book ''The Institutes'' brought the classification to Europe, where it became fundamental to Catholic confessional practices as documented in penitential manuals, sermons such as " The Parson's Tale" from Chaucer's '' Canterbury Tales'' and artworks such as Dante's ''Purgatory'' where the penitents of Mount Purgatory are gr ... The Eternal sin, sin against the Holy Ghost and the sins that cry to heaven, sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance are considered especially serious. This type of sin is distinguished from a venial sin that simply leads to a weakening of a person's relationship with God. Despite its gravity, a person can repent of having committed a mortal sin. Such repentance is the primary requisite for forgiveness and absolution. Teaching o ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Self-sacrifice In Jewish Law
Although rare, there are instances within Jewish law that mandate a Jew to sacrifice their own life rather than violate a religious prohibition. One of these prohibitions is that no life should be taken, including one's own. Many more ritual prohibitions exist as well, which means that under limited circumstances a Jew has to self-sacrifice when the greater good calls for breaking a more minor dictate. This practice reflects the practical and perhaps malleable nature of Judaic law. Overview In general, a Jew must violate biblically mandated, and certainly rabbinically mandated, religious laws of Judaism in order to preserve human life. This principle is known as ''ya'avor v'al ye'hareg'' (, "transgress and do not be killed") and it applies to virtually all of Jewish ritual law, including the best known laws of '' Shabbat'' and '' kashrut'', and even to the severest prohibitions, such as those relating to circumcision, ''chametz'' on Passover, and fasting on '' Yom Kippur''. ... ''Spleen and Ideal'' is the second studio album by Australian band Dead Can Dance. It was released on 25 November 1985 by 4AD. Discussing the album's musical style, AllMusic commented that with ''Spleen and Ideal'', Dead Can Dance "fully took the plunge into the heady mix of musical traditions that would come to define its sound and style for the remainder of its career. The straightforward goth affectations are exchanged for a sonic palette and range of imagination". The cover image shows the partial demolition of Grain Elevator No. 2 at Salford Q ...
