Cardiff West (UK Parliament Constituency)
Cardiff West () is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Alex Barros-Curtis of the Labour Party. The constituency retained its name and gained a ward as part of the 2023 review of Westminster constituencies and under the June 2023 final recommendations of the Boundary Commission for Wales for the 2024 United Kingdom general election. Ely (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Ely is an electoral ward in the west of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers its namesake community, Ely. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. It has previously been represented by the Labour Party, until February 2019 when Plaid Cymru won one of the council seats. Description The ward boundaries are coterminous with the community of Ely, north of Cowbridge Road West. To the south is the Caerau ward, to the north are the Creigiau & St. Fagans and Fairwater wards. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 14,603. County elections 2019 by-election Labour councillor (since 2012) Jim Murphy died in December 2018 aged 72. George Thomas, 1st Viscount Tonypandy
Thomas George Thomas, 1st Viscount Tonypandy, (29 January 1909 – 22 September 1997) was a British politician who served as a member of parliament (MP) and Speaker of the House of Commons from 1976 to 1983. He was elected as a Labour MP. Born in Port Talbot, South Wales, he initially worked as a teacher in both London and Cardiff. An MP from 1945 to 1983, he held office in Harold Wilson's 1964–1970 Labour administration, notably as Secretary of State for Wales from 1968 to 1970. As a junior minister at the Welsh Office, he was one of the first on the scene of the Aberfan disaster (21 October 1966), and was later involved in the controversial government decision to use money from the Aberfan Charity Fund to clear remaining National Coal Board waste tips from around the village. Taff's Well
Taff's Well () is a semi-rural village, Community (Wales), community and electoral ward located at the south-eastern tip of Rhondda Cynon Taf, north-west of the city centre of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Known locally as the 'Gates to the South Wales Valleys, Valleys' by some and considered part of the Valleys by others, it is separated from Gwaelod-y-Garth by the River Taff. Taff's Well is distinguished because it contains the only Hot spring, thermal spring in Wales. The tepid water is thought to rise along a fault-line from the Carboniferous Limestone, in somewhat similar manner to the warm springs at Bristol and Bath. The Welsh myth of the Taff's Well Turtle originates here. Various religious groups regard it as a spiritual site. Radyr is an electoral ward (sometimes known as Radyr and Morganstown) in the northwest of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It is coterminous with the community of Radyr and Morganstown which as the name suggests includes the villages of Radyr and Morganstown. According to the 2011 UK Census the population of the ward was 6,417. Background The Radyr ward was created in 1999 following ''The City and County of Cardiff (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1998'', coming into effect with the county council elections in 1999. Prior to this, Radyr had been joined with St Fagans as part of a Radyr and St Fagans ward, which had been created in 1982. Pentyrch
Pentyrch (sometimes ; ) is a village and community located on the western outskirts of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The village gives its name to a Cardiff local authority electoral ward, Pentyrch, which covers the village and immediate surrounding area. The Pentyrch community includes the neighbouring village of Creigiau and Gwaelod y Garth. People living in Pentyrch are commonly known as "Pentyrchians". On 26 February 2016, multiple witnesses reported seeing UFOs. Creigiau & St. Fagans was a rural electoral ward on the western edge of Cardiff, Wales. Description The ward covered the villages of St. Fagans and Creigiau (in the community of Pentyrch) and the surrounding rural area. The Creigiau/St Fagans ward elected a councillor to Cardiff Council. The ward fell within the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff West. It was bounded by Rhondda Cynon Taff to the northwest; Pentyrch and Radyr & Morganstown to the northeast; Llandaff and Fairwater to the east; Ely to the southeast; and the Vale of Glamorgan to the southwest. Fairwater is an electoral ward in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers Fairwater and Pentrebane on the outskirts of the urban area. The Fairwater ward is bordered to the west by Pentyrch and St Fagans, to the east by Llandaff and to the south by the Ely ward. Caerau (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Caerau () is a community in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. Often considered part of Wenvoe by gully, Heol Trelai is the main road or avenue, lined with large trees. Dominated mostly by private housing, it has the Western Leisure Centre, supermarkets, schools and churches. History Caerau, named after the Welsh language word for 'Forts', sits at the base of a hill slope on the edge of Cardiff. In 2012, Caerau Hillfort underwent a dig by archaeological television programme ''Time Team''. The research showed that the Iron Age site consists of a substantial hilltop surrounded by multi-vallate earthworks (rings of banks and ditches) that have been cut through at the southeastern extent by a major road.
