The Cardiff Dragons were a Speedway team which operated from 1950 until their closure in 1953. They were based at the Penarth Road Stadium in Penarth Road, Cardiff. History After competing in open meetings for one season (in 1950) the Dragons inaugural league season was the 1951 Speedway National League Division Three, where they finished in 7th place. The following season they joined the Southern League (which was a new name for the third division). The finished runner-up behind Rayleigh Rockets during the 1952 Speedway Southern League. Penarth Road Stadium
The Penarth Road Stadium, was a former motorcycle speedway stadium, on Penarth Road in the Grangetown area Cardiff. The stadium was located adjacent to the River Ely, where it meanders between Penarth Road and the Barry railway line. Today it is the site of an industrial park on a road called Stadium Close. Speedway History The nearby White City Stadium had been sold to a steel works in 1937, leaving Cardiff without speedway. During 1950, Mr. A.J. Lennox and Mr. Leslie Maidment started to build a speedway track at the site of a rubbish dump in the Grangetown Area of Cardiff and speedway training events were held there during the year. In November 1950, the Speedway Control Board visited the track in order to issue a licence for league racing the following year. The venue was able to hold up to 30,000 spectators with its terracing. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). The 1951 National League Division Three was the fifth and final season of British speedway's National League Division Three The league remained with 10 teams but there were changes. Oxford Cheetahs, Leicester Hunters and Liverpool Chads had all moved up to Division Two whilst Tamworth Tammies dropped out. Plymouth Devils dropped down from Division Two. The three new sides were Cardiff Dragons, Long Eaton Archers and Wolverhampton Wasps. Poole Pirates won their first title. Alan Smith of Plymouth topped the averages. The Rayleigh Rockets were a Speedway team which operated from 1949 until their closure in 1973 from the Rayleigh Weir Stadium in Rayleigh, Essex . History The Rockets inaugural league season was in 1949 Speedway National League Division Three, where they finished in 12th place. After two more seasons in Division Three they joined the Southern League (which was a new name for the third division). The became champions of the league in 1952 and 1953. The Rockets closed in 1958 but re-opened again in 1960 and entered the Provincial League. The Provincial league was the second division of speedway at the time and Rayleigh won their third piece of silverware after winning the 1960 Provincial Speedway League. In 1964, they entered a regional Metropolitan League but this was the last league racing seen until 1968, when Len Silver took over as promoter.
