Capriccio (music)
A or caprice (sometimes plural: ''caprices'', ''capri'' or, in Italian, ''capricci''), is a piece of music, usually fairly free in form and of a lively character. The typical ''capriccio'' is one that is fast, intense, and often virtuoso, virtuosic in nature. The term has been applied in disparate ways, covering works using many different procedures and forms, as well as a wide variety of vocal and instrumental forces. The earliest occurrence of the term was in 1561 by Jacquet de Berchem and applied to a set of Madrigal (music), madrigals. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, it could refer to madrigals, music intended alternatively for voices or instruments, or strictly instrumental pieces, especially keyboard compositions.Erich Schwandt, Schwandt, Erich. 2001. Fantasia In C Major (Haydn)
Fantasia in C major, Hob. XVII/4, "''Capriccio''", was written by Joseph Haydn. It is based on the Austrian folk song ' ("The farmer's wife has lost her cat"). In March 1789, he wrote to the publishing company Artaria, saying, "In a moment of great good humour I have completed a new Capriccio for fortepiano, whose taste, singularity and special construction cannot fail to receive approval from connoisseurs and amateurs alike. In a single movement, rather long, but not particularly difficult." The fact that Haydn wrote the fantasia "for connoisseurs and amateurs alike" was most likely a nod to C. P. E. Bach's ''Für Kenner und Liebhaber'' ("For Connoisseurs and Amateurs") that he had requested from Artaria the year before. However, the piece was more difficult than Haydn thought it would be, with zany virtuosity and orchestral effects, recalling the last movement of his Sonata No. 48. Capriccio (Janáček)
The Capriccio for Piano Left-Hand and Chamber Ensemble (sometimes titled Defiance, in Czech: ''Vzdor'') is a composition by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. The work was written in the autumn of 1926 and is remarkable not just in the context of Janáček's output, but it also occupies an exceptional position in the literature written for piano played only by the left hand.Procházková (2001) p. XXI. The piece is scored for piano, flute, two trumpets, three trombones and tenor tuba. Background The work was apparently inspired by the request of the pianist Otakar Hollmann, who had lost the use of his right hand during World War I. During their first meeting Janáček refused to write such a work, declaring: "But, my dear boy, why do you want to play with one hand? It's hard to dance when you have only one leg."Procházková (2001) p. XVI. Janáček later changed his decision and began composing a piano piece for left hand, but didn't notify Hollman about the composition. Hollm ... Capriccio For Piano And Orchestra
The Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra was written by Igor Stravinsky in Nice between 1926 and 1929. The score was revised in 1949. Stravinsky designed the Capriccio to be a virtuosic vehicle which would allow him to earn a living from playing the piano part. The Capriccio, together with the Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, belonged to a catalogue of breadwinning pieces which Stravinsky composed to support himself after fleeing the Russian Revolution to live in Western Europe. History The Allegro capriccioso movement that would become the finale was begun first, in Nice on Christmas Day 1928, and provided the musical material from which the other movements grew. It was followed by the second movement, completed at Echarvines, near Talloires, on 13 September 1929, and then by the opening Presto. The orchestration of the first movement was completed on 26 October and that of the last movement on 9 November 1929. The premiere took place in the Salle Pleyel, Paris, on 6 Dece ... Capriccio (opera)
''Capriccio'', Op. 85, is the final opera by German composer Richard Strauss, subtitled "A Conversation Piece for Music". It received its premiere performance at the Nationaltheater München on 28 October 1942. Strauss and Clemens Krauss wrote the German libretto, but its genesis came from Stefan Zweig in the 1930s, and Joseph Gregor further developed the idea several years later. Strauss then took it on, but finally recruited Krauss as his collaborator. Most of the final libretto is by Krauss. The opera originally consisted of a single act lasting close to two and a half hours. This, in combination with the work's conversational tone and emphasis on text, has prevented it from achieving great popularity. But at Hamburg in 1957, , who directed the opera at its premiere in Munich, inserted an interval at the point when the Countess orders chocolate, and other directors have often followed suit, including performances at Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The final scene for Countess ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Capriccio (record Label)
Capriccio is a formerly German, now Austrian, classical music record label. The original Capriccio label was founded in the 1980s and was until 2010 part of Delta-Music GmbH a German record company located in Großkönigsdorf, Frechen near Cologne, which was founded in 1970 by Philippe Sautot and Jürgen Moll. Following the bankruptcy of the Delta Music GMBH, the artistic director of Capriccio, Johannes Kernmayer, decided to carry on with several ongoing, but unfunded, recording projects from the profitable classical section of Delta as "Phoenix Edition." The releases on Phoenix Edition were commercially successful and enabled Kernmayer to rescue the classical back-catalogue of Capriccio and reestablish the Capriccio label as a new independent company in Vienna. Capriccio (art)
In painting, a capriccio (, plural: ''capricci'' ; in older English works often anglicized as "caprice") is an Architecture, architectural fantasy, placing together buildings, Archaeology, archaeological ruins and other architectural elements in fictional and often fantastical combinations. These paintings may also include staffage (figures). Capriccio falls under the more general term of landscape painting. This style of painting was introduced in the Renaissance art, Renaissance and continued into the Baroque art, Baroque. By the late 18th century the term had expanded to mean any image with an equivalent degree of fantasy, for example as used in the titles of print series by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Francisco Goya, Goya, both of whom focus on figures rather than architecture. The term is also used for other types of art with an element of fantasy (as Capriccio (music), capriccio in music). Capriccio style There are several etymologies that have been put forward for ' ... Capriccio (Rex Whistler)
''Capriccio'' is a large wall mural by the English painter Rex Whistler (1905–1944). It hangs in the dining room of Plas Newydd, the historic home of the Marquesses of Anglesey, now owned by the National Trust, which has views over the Menai Strait and the mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales. The mural is Whistler's largest work, and also the largest canvas painting in the United Kingdom. The work was executed onsite between 1936 and 1938. It is 58 feet long, taking up an entire wall of the dining room. It is a ''trompe-l'œil'' harbour scene and seascape, its subject matter is Italianate in style but mixes views of "British and Italian buildings, and the mountains of Snowdonia". The mural includes a self-portrait of Whistler carrying a broom as the work continues into the south-side colonnade In classical architecture, a colonnade is a long sequence of columns joined by their entablature, often free-standing, or part of a building.
