The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway was a Southeastern railroad that operated in the Carolinas immediately after Reconstruction era of the United States, Reconstruction. It ran from Mount Airy, North Carolina, southeast through Greensboro, North Carolina, Greensboro and Fayetteville, North Carolina, Fayetteville to the Atlantic port of Wilmington, North Carolina. A significant branch also ran from Fayetteville south to Bennettsville, South Carolina. History The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway was created in 1879 with the consolidation of the Western Railroad (North Carolina), Western Railroad and the Mount Airy Railroad. The Western Railroad was a railroad in North Carolina connecting Fayetteville to the coal fields of Egypt (now Cumnock).The Interstate Commerce Commission stated that 42 miles of railroad between Fayetteville and Cumnock were constructed in 1860. Red Springs & Northern Railroad
The Red Springs & Northern Railroad is a 13-mile short-line railroad extending from Parkton to Red Springs, in southeastern North Carolina. It connects with major carrier CSX Transportation in Parkton. The line was originally constructed by the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroad to the South Carolina state line near McColl, South Carolina, in 1883-1885. The trackage became the Atlantic Coast Line's "Bennettsville Branch" in 1898. The portion of the route from Red Springs to McColl was removed in 1973. ACL-successor CSX abandoned the remainder of the line in the 1980s. Spring Lake, North Carolina
Spring Lake is a town in Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. The 2010 census recorded the population at 11,964 people, with an estimated population in 2019 of 12,005. History The current name of the town first appeared around 1923 for a spring fed lake, which probably formed when the railroad was built about 1860. The community grew slowly until World War II. At its incorporation, the town selected the post office on Main Street as the center of town. The town limits extended only eight-tenths of a mile from its center, but increased rapidly as nearby Fort Bragg was built up. Atlantic and Western is part of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and formerly part of Rail Management and Consulting. It was reorganized in 1927 from the Atlantic and Western Railroad. Cumnock, formerly known as Egypt, is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community in northwestern Lee County, North Carolina, Lee County, North Carolina, United States.
