''Cannonball Funk’n Friends'' is an album by jazz pianist Roberto Magris released on the JMood label in 2013, featuring performances by the Roberto Magris Quintet with Hermon Mehari, Jim Mair, Dominique Sanders and Alonzo "Scooter" Powell. The album is a tribute to saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and his jazz-funk and soul jazz bands. Reception The All About Jazz review by Jack Bowers awarded the album 3½ stars and simply states: "In choosing music for the quintet, Magris focused on 'the groovy side' of Cannonball Adderley's songbook. The mood is cheeky and aggressive from start to finish, and everyone plays well within that framework. What the album does not have, of course, is either of the Adderley brothers, and so it is missing the deep-rooted ebullience they would bring to any such enterprise. Roberto Magris
Roberto Magris (born 19 June 1959) is an Italian jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Early life Magris was born in Trieste, Italy, on 19 June 1959. He had piano lessons between the ages of four and sixteen. He became interested in jazz after hearing the Oscar Peterson album '' The Way I Really Play'' in 1977. Career 1980–2000 In the 1980s, he led the jazz trio Gruppo Jazz Marca and recorded three albums, '' Comunicazione Sonora'' (1982), ''Aria di Città'' (1983) and ''Mitteleuropa'' (1986), re-issued in 2006 by the English Label Arision. Oscar Pettiford
Oscar Pettiford (September 30, 1922 – September 8, 1960) was an American jazz double bassist and composer. He was one of the earliest musicians to work in the bebop idiom. Jazz bassist Christian McBride called Pettiford "probably the most important bass player of that bebop generation in terms of creating new language for the bass." Early life Pettiford was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, United States. His mother identified as being of Choctaw descent, and his father Harry "Doc" Pettiford identified as half Cherokee and half African-American. He grew up playing in the family band, in which he sang and danced before switching to piano at the age of 12, then to double bass when he was 14. The Hammond organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert, first manufactured in 1935. Alto Sax
