The 1937 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria on Saturday 2 October 1937 to elect 45 of the 65 members of the state's Victorian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly. Background On 21 March 1936, Patrick Denigan of the Labor Party won the seat of Electoral district of Allandale, Allandale in a 1936 Allandale state by-election, by-election following the death of UAP member Thomas Parkin. Thomas Maltby
Major Sir Thomas Karran Maltby (17 October 1890 – 2 June 1976) was a politician in Victoria, Australia. He was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for nearly 32 years from 1929 to 1961, served in several ministries and was Speaker of the assembly from 1947 to 1950. Early life Matlby was born in Barnadown, a small town near Bendigo, Victoria, to Thomas Karran Maltby (a shopkeeper from the Isle of Man) and Ada Agnes Fascher. His father died in 1893, and his mother remarried the following year. Maltby was educated at Camp Hill Central School, but left school aged 11 to work as a newsboy and shop messenger. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian communist party founded in 1920. The party existed until roughly 1991, with its membership and influence having been in a steady decline since its peak in 1945. Like most communist parties in the West, the party was heavily involved in the labour movement and the trade unions. Its membership, popularity and influence grew significantly during most of the interwar period before reaching its climax in 1945, where the party achieved a membership of slightly above 22,000 members. Trevor Oldham
Trevor Donald Oldham (10 March 1900 – 2 May 1953) was an Australian politician, who was the leader of the Liberal Party in the state of Victoria from 1952 until his death in 1953. The eldest of three sons born to Arthur and Ethel Oldham, he was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He had enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 7 November 1918, four days before the Armistice. He married Kathleen Cooch in 1929. Business career Oldham graduated in law at Melbourne University in 1921, and practised as a solicitor until the weight of parliamentary duties limited his time. He was a past president of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and a former deputy chancellor of Melbourne University. Arthur Cook (Australian Politician)
Arthur Ernest Cook (6 September 1883 – 10 April 1945) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sandhurst to engine driver Robert Cook and Mary Daley, and attended state school before becoming a hairdresser. He owned his own business in Bendigo from around 1901. On 28 April 1909 he married Mary Victoria Rocke, with whom he had four children. Cook served as vice-president of the Bendigo Trades Hall Council and was on the Labor Party's state executive from 1916 to 1918. In 1924, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Bendigo West, transferring to Bendigo in 1927. Roy Paton
James Roy Paton (23 November 1882 – 25 April 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born in Yabba, Victoria to grazier Archibald Paton and Ruth McMeekin. He attended Brighton Grammar School and then worked on the family property. On 30 April 1923 he married Isobel Mary McMeekin, with whom he had two children. He then moved to farm at Tallangatta, and from 1923 to 1947 served on Towong Shire Council, with two terms as president from 1929 to 1930 and from 1932 to 1933. He was the founding president of the Country Party's Tallangatta branch, and in 1932 won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Benambra Benambra is a town 28 kilometres (17 mi) north-east of Omeo and 430 kilometres (267 mi) east of the state capital Melbourne, in the Australian Alps of East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Thomas Walter Mitchell (11 November 1906 – 4 February 1984) was an Australian politician, author and sportsman. Mitchell was born at the family property "Towong Hill", near Corryong, Victoria and was educated at Cranbrook School, Sydney and Cambridge University from 1925 to 1930 before returning to Australia, and Towong Hill. At the time the property consisted of of prime land beside the Murray River, but today has been reduced to , as sections have been split to various family members. A keen skier, Mitchell founded the Australian National Ski Federation in 1932, captained the Australian skiing team and won gold medals in competitions against England and New Zealand.
