Camper and Nicholson is a yacht design and manufacturing company based in Gosport, England, for over two hundred years, constructing many significant vessels, such as Gipsy Moth IV and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip's yacht Bloodhound (yacht), Bloodhound. Its customers included Thomas Sopwith, William Kissam Vanderbilt II and George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough. Its yachts competed in America's Cup, The America's Cup, The Fastnet Race, the Olympic Games, Olympics, the Ocean Race (1973–1974 Whitbread Round the World Race, Whitbread Round the World Race) and many other yacht races. Gosport ( ) is a town and non-metropolitan district with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status in Hampshire, England. At the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 Census, the town had a population of 70,131 and the district had a population of 81,952. The National Maritime Museum (NMM) is a maritime museum in Greenwich, London. It is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, a network of museums in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. HM Motor Gun Boat 2007 was a motor gunboat operated by Royal Navy Coastal Forces during the Second World War. She was initially built as one of eight gunboats ordered by the Turkish Navy, but which went on to see service in the North Sea as fast blockade runners. She was initially classed as the merchant vessel ''Gay Corsair'', crewed by men of the merchant navy and sailing under the red ensign. She became HM Motor Gunboat ''507'' after being acquired by the Royal Navy, and finally HM Motor Gun Boat ''2007''. She was wrecked under this name in 1945. Construction ''Gay Corsair'' was built by Camper and Nicholson as part of an order of eight motor gunboats placed by the Turkish Navy. ''Gay Viking'' was a blockade runner of the British Merchant Navy. Originally under construction as a Motor Gun Boat, ''Gay Viking'' was one of eight vessels that were ordered by the Turkish Navy, but were requisitioned by the Royal Navy to serve with Coastal Forces during the Second World War. Originally intended to be HMMGB 506, the vessel was instead completed as a blockade runner for the Merchant Navy and named ''Gay Viking''. She operated out of Hull on two separate operations to the Scandinavian countries. She was one of the more successful of her group, but was lost in a collision while returning from one of these operations. Reports indicate that she may have been salvaged after this and gone on to sail for a considerable number of years as a civilian vessel. A blockade runner is a merchant vessel used for evading a naval blockade of a port or strait. It is usually light and fast, using stealth and speed rather than confronting the blockaders in order to break the blockade. Blockade runners usually transport cargo, for example bringing food or arms to a blockaded city. They have also carried mail in an attempt to communicate with the outside world. Blockade runners are often the fastest ships available, and come lightly armed and armored. Their operations are quite risky since blockading fleets would not hesitate to fire on them. However, the potential profits (economically or militarily) from a successful blockade run are tremendous, so blockade-runners typically had excellent crews. Motor Gunboat
The motor gunboat (MGB) was a small, high-speed British military vessel of the Second World War, which was armed with a mix of guns, in contrast to the physically similar motor torpedo boat (MTB), whose main offensive weapon were torpedoes. The small size of the MGBs, and their high speed, made them difficult targets for German E-boats, though, like their opponents, they were limited by heavy weather, because they did not provide a stable-enough platform to aim the guns. The large number of guns required a relatively large crew, numbering as high as thirty men on the largest boats. Description MGBs were extremely heavily armed for vessels of their size. The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) is a British yacht club. Its clubhouse is Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. Member yachts are given the suffix RYS to their names, and are permitted (with the appropriate warrant) to wear the White Ensign of the Royal Navy rather than the merchant Red Ensign worn by the majority of other UK registered vessels. The Gosport Aircraft Company was a short-lived United Kingdom, British aircraft manufacturer based at Gosport, Hampshire formed at the start of the First World War by Charles Allom, Sir Charles Allom of White, Allom & Company and Charles Ernest Nicholson of Camper and Nicholsons boat-builders.
