Cambrian Railways 4-4-0 Locomotives
The Cambrian Railways 4-4-0 locomotives consisted of five tender locomotive classes introduced between 1878 and 1921. Three of them were designed for the Cambrian Railways and supplied new, the fourth class was rebuilt from 4-4-0 tank locomotives, and the fifth consisted of secondhand purchases. Altogether 37 locomotives were owned by the Cambrian at one time or another, of which 35 passed to the Great Western Railway (GWR) at the start of 1922. The last was withdrawn in 1933. In addition there was a class of six 4-4-0 tank locomotives introduced in 1905, four of which were not rebuilt as tender locomotives. They all passed to the GWR, and the last were withdrawn in 1923. None of these locomotives were preserved, but another locomotive from the same class as the six 4-4-0 tank locomotives was preserved. Metropolitan Railway A Class
The Metropolitan Railway A Class and B Class are condensing steam locomotives built for the Metropolitan Railway by Beyer Peacock, first used in 1864. A total of 40 A Class and 26 of the slightly different B Class were delivered by 1885. Used underground, the locomotives condensed their steam, and coke or smokeless coal was burnt to reduce the smoke. Most locomotives were withdrawn after electrification in the early 20th century, forty having been sold by 1907. The last one was withdrawn in 1948, and is now preserved at the London Transport Museum. Railway Correspondence And Travel Society
The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS) is a national society founded in Cheltenham, England in 1928 to bring together those interested in rail transport and locomotives. Since 1929 the Society has published a regular journal ''The Railway Observer'' which records the current railway scene. The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841.
