Calyptorhynchus Baudinii
Baudin's black cockatoo (''Zanda baudinii''), also known as Baudin's cockatoo or the long-billed black cockatoo, is a species of genus '' Zanda'' found in southwest Australia. The epithet commemorates the French explorer Nicolas Baudin. It has a short crest on the top of its head, and the plumage is mostly greyish black. It has prominent white cheek patches and a white tail band. The body feathers are edged with white giving a scalloped appearance. Adult males have a dark grey beak and pink eye-rings. Adult females have a bone coloured beak, grey eye-rings and ear patches that are paler than those of the males. Taxonomy and naming Baudin's black cockatoo was depicted in 1832 by the English artist Edward Lear in his '' Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots'' from a specimen owned by the naturalist Benjamin Leadbeater. North Dandalup Important Bird Area comprises a highly fragmented 76 km2 tract of land lying about 50 km south of Perth in the Peel region of south-west Western Australia. It is named after the nearby small town of North Dandalup. Description The Important Bird Area (IBA) boundaries are defined by remnant native vegetation, mainly eucalypt open forest and woodland, within a 6 km foraging radius of non-breeding season roost sites for black cockatoos. The IBA consists of all blocks of native vegetation greater than one hectare in water catchment areas, state forests, nature reserves and private land. The Araluen-Wungong Important Bird Area is a 123 km2 tract of land in the Darling Ranges on the south-eastern fringe of the city of Perth, Western Australia. The name derives from the Araluen Botanic Park within the Important Bird Area (IBA), and the adjacent suburb of Wungong. It is an important site for black cockatoos. Description The boundaries of the IBA are defined by the presence of blocks of native vegetation larger than 1 ha within a 6 km foraging radius of known non-breeding season roost sites for the black cockatoos. Great Cocky Count
The Great Cocky Count is an annual census designed to provide accurate data about the number and distribution of black cockatoos. It is the largest single survey of black cockatoos in Western Australia. The count is a citizen science survey and is conducted at sunset one night in autumn, usually in early April. Habitat Destruction
Habitat destruction (also termed habitat loss or habitat reduction) occurs when a natural habitat is no longer able to support its native species. The organisms once living there have either moved elsewhere, or are dead, leading to a decrease in biodiversity and species numbers.
