Calliandra Haematocephala
''Calliandra haematocephala'', the red powder puff, is a species of flowering plants of the genus ''Calliandra'' in the family Fabaceae. Description Rambling shrub or small tree with branched pinnate, silky leaves and powder-puff-like balls of conspicuous dark crimson stamens. ''Calliandra haematocephala'' is a fast growing shrub that can grow tall but also spreads wide. If desired it can be kept smaller by trimming. Interesting enough the leaves close at night. The red powder puff flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds but only appear from November -April in the Northern Hemisphere. The buds before the flowers open look like raspberries. This large shrub can be grown indoor if trimmed and grown in a pot but it will be best if you can grow it outside in a warm climate. Justus Carl Hasskarl (6 December 1811 – 5 January 1894) was a German explorer and botanist specializing in pteridophytes, bryophytes and spermatophytes. Biography Justus Carl Hasskarl was born in Kassel in the Kingdom of Westphalia. In his earlier life he studied at a Botanical Garden, Bonn, plant nursery in Poppelsdorf in 1827. In 1834 he studied natural history while at the same time preparing himself for an expedition to the tropics. In 1836, he traveled to Java and tried to make a living through his knowledge in physics and medicine, with little success. Subsequently, he sent a request to the governor general to work in the Bogor Botanical Gardens, National Botanical Garden and a year later he was appointed assistant curator. ''Calliandra'' is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, in the mimosoid clade of the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It contains about 140 species that are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Description The genus comprises herbaceous perennial plants, shrubs, and rarely small trees, growing tall, with bipinnate leaves. The flowers are produced in cylindrical or globose inflorescences and have numerous long slender stamens which give rise to the common names powder-puff, powder puff plant, and fairy duster. These plants flower all year round, but the best blooming is in spring and summer. They can be easily pruned.
