''Called Back'' is an 1883 mystery/romance novel written by Englishman Frederick John Fargus under the pseudonym Hugh Conway and published in Bristol by J. W. Arrowsmith. Over 350,000 copies were sold within four years, and Fargus produced a stage version in London in 1884. The book was popular during the 1880s in Amherst, Massachusetts, a fact that has been correlated with the use of the phrase "called back" by American poet Emily Dickinson Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Little-known during her life, she has since been regarded as one of the most important figures in American poetry. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massac ... in her later life. The book, which a friend sent to her, impressed her. She used the title in a later letter. ''Called Back'' is a 1911 Australian feature-length film directed by W. J. Lincoln based on a popular play which was adapted from an 1883 novel by Hugh Conway. Although the movie was a popular success it is now considered a lost film. It was one of several films Lincoln made with the Tait family, who had produced ''The Story of the Kelly Gang''. Plot In Italy, Dr Ceneri gives money to support Garibaldi, including money meant for his orphaned niece and nephew, Pauline and Anthony. When they grow up, they learn of what he did with the money, and Anthony is killed by the villainous Macari. This is seen by Pauline who goes insane, and the blind Gilbert Vaughan. Vaughan regains his sight, Pauline regains her sanity, and they are married while Macari is arrested.
