Callan (Parliament Of Ireland Constituency)
History Callan was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons until 1800. It was established by royal charter in 1585, apparently at the request of Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond. He was a cousin of Elizabeth I on her mother's side, and one of the few Irish leaders in whom she had complete trust. It was very much a Butler "family borough", whose seats were held by families like the Comerfords, who were Butler clients. Callan, County Kilkenny
Callan () is a town and civil parish in County Kilkenny in Ireland. Situated 16 km (10 mi) south of Kilkenny on the N76 road to Clonmel, it is near the border with County Tipperary. It is the second largest town in the county, and had a population of 2,475 at the 2016 census. Callan is the chief town of the barony of the same name. History and name Callan was founded by William the Marshal in 1207 and reputedly gets its name from the High King of Ireland, Niall Caille. It is reported that while at war with the Norsemen the High King arrived in Callan to find that its river was in flood. The King witnessed his servant trying to cross the river and being swept away by the fast-flowing current. The King, recorded in history as a man of action, seeing the impending disaster, impetuously urged his horse into the fast flowing river in a vain bid to save his servant, only to be also overcome and drowned by the torrent. Callan River
The Callan River is a river in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Rising near Tullnawood lake, it flows in a generally northerly direction, past Darkley, passing within a few miles of Keady town, through Tassagh and on to Armagh. It joins the River Blackwater 1.3 km downstream from Charlemont or 1.6 km upstream from Bond's Bridge. It is navigable by dinghy or canoe for 2 km to Fairlawn Bridge. The area upstream of Armagh has many former linen mills that were built to use the waterpower of the river. There is also a viaduct at Tassagh that once carried the railway line from Armagh to Keady. Originally the Callan was joined at Fairlawn Bridge by the River Tall, coming from the direction of Richhill and Ballyhegan, but the Tall was diverted at a point 2 km upstream of the former confluence into a cut excavated in 1851–4 which conveys it directly to the Blackwater just above Verner's Bridge. Mount Callan
Slievecallan or Slieve Callan (), also historically called 'Mount Callan', is a mountain with a height of in west County Clare, Ireland. It is the third highest mountain in the county. There is a small lake and two megalithic tombs on the south side, and traditionally the mountain was used for Lughnasa gatherings. Archaeology On the south side of the mountain, in the townland of Knockalassa, are the remains of two megalithic tombs; one on the mountainside and one further down by the Ennis Road. Irish folklore holds that it is bad luck to damage or disrespect such tombs and that deliberately doing so could bring a curse. An ogham stone was found in the late 18th century in the same area. Pototan, Iloilo
Pototan ( krj, Banwa ka Pototan, hil, Banwa sang Pototan, tgl, Bayan ng Pototan), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Iloilo, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 78,298 people. The town lies on the banks of the Suage River, north from Iloilo City. The town has an area of 94 km2, 85% of which is agricultural land. In December 1997, it was declared as the "Christmas Capital of Western Visayas" because of its famed Christmas Festival of Lights. Callan (barony)
The barony of Callan () is a barony in the west of County Kilkenny, Ireland. The barony is in size. It is one of 12 baronies in County Kilkenny. Unusually for a barony, it contains only two civil parishes which together comprise 65 townlands. The chief town is Callan. The barony is bordered by the baronies of Shillelogher to the north (whose chief town is Bennettsbridge) and by Kells to the south (whose chief town is Kells). The N76 road bisects the barony. Notable features include Callan Motte and Callan Augustinian Friary. Callan was an early medieval cantred within the shire of Kilkenny, and part of the historic kingdom of Osraige (''Ossory''). Callan Data Systems, Inc. was an American computer manufacturer founded by David Callan in Westlake Village, California on January 24, 1980. The company was best known for their Unistar range of Unix workstations, and shut down again in 1985. Unistar After initial success building a Multibus chassis with a self-contained VT100-compatible CRT display terminal to OEMs, the company designed and built desktop workstations named Unistar using the Sun-1 board, which was based on the Motorola 68000 CPU, and which ran UNIX licensed from AT&T. The manufacturing consisted of building the chassis, power supplies, motherboard, and a few critical Multibus boards such as the CPU, memory, and floppy and hard drive controllers. Camp Callan
Camp Callan was a United States Army anti-aircraft artillery replacement training center that was operational during World War II. It was located on the southern west coast of the United States, north of San Diego at La Jolla, California. The facility was closed shortly after the war ended and few traces of the base remain. Location and current use Camp Callan was located near U.S. Highway 101, about north of downtown San Diego in the La Jolla area. It occupied a roughly rectangular piece of land approximately north-to-south and east-to-west. This land is on the Torrey Pines Mesa and is near the Pacific Ocean.
