Bulgarian Jews In Israel
Bulgarian Jews in Israel are Jewish immigrants and descendants of the immigrants of the Bulgarian Jewish communities, who now reside within the state of Israel. They number around 75,000 in the wider definition, and 7,500 in the narrower scope (those with Bulgarian citizenship). History After the establishment of the state of Israel, most of the Bulgarian Jewish population left for Israel, leaving only about a thousand Bulgarian Jews living in Bulgaria today (1,162 according to the 2011 census). According to Israeli government statistics, 43,961 people from Bulgaria emigrated to Israel between 1948 and 2006, making Bulgarian Jews in Israel the fourth largest group to come from a European country, after the Soviet Union, Romania and Poland. Albert Cohen (actor)
Albert Cohen (; born 9 June 1932) is an Israeli actor, voice actor, theatre director, singer and accordionist. Biography Albert Cohen was born in Sofia to a Bulgarian Jewish family. He attended the National Academy of Music and later played at Sofia's National Theatre. In 1949, Cohen and his family immigrated to Israel. Cohen married twice. His first wife, , a pianist for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, died from multiple sclerosis in 1988. They had two sons: Ady, a composer, and Sharon, a voice actor and translator. His granddaughter is also an actress. Cohen's second wife, Da'at Levontin, who he married in the early 1990s, is also a pianist. Cohen has resided in Ramat Gan since 1960. Moni Moshonov
Shlomo "Moni" Moshonov (; born 18 August 1951) is an Israeli actor, comedian, and theater director. Early life Moshonov was born in Ramla, Israel, to a Bulgarian Jewish family that immigrated to Israel from Sofia, Bulgaria. His father, Moshe, who studied law in Sofia, sold textiles at the Ramla market. Moshonov grew up in Ramla, Israel. He did his military service in an Israel Defense Forces entertainment troupe. Raphael Mechoulam
Raphael Mechoulam (; 5 November 1930 – 9 March 2023) was a Bulgarian-born Israeli organic chemist and a professor in the Department of Natural Materials at the School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Mechoulam served as Rector of the university from 1979–1982. He was elected to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 1994 and served as its scientific chair from 2007-2013. Emanuel Levy () is a veteran, well-known American film critic and professor emeritus of sociology and film of Arizona State University. For the past 50 years, he has taught a wide variety of courses in sociology, film studies, and popular culture at Columbia University, New School for Social Research, Wellesley College, UCLA, and Arizona State University. Shmuel Levi
Shmuel Levi (; 14 March 1884 – July 1966) was an Israeli painter. Biography Shmuel Levi (Ophel) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. The name Opal was added by him as a pen name, yet at some point Levi abandoned it. His artwork stressed the Orientalist style especially seen by the Yemenite Jews. His parents were Abraham and Naomi Levi. After completing his studies in gymnasia, he began his studies at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia. With the establishment of the Bezalel Academy in 1906, Levi immigrated to the Land of Israel at the invitation of Boris Schatz. While at the academy, Levi organized the first choir at Bezalel. Shabtai Konorti
Shabtai Konorti (; 13 December 1943 – 27 May 2002) was an Israeli actor. Biography Born in Bulgaria, Konorti moved to Israel with his family at the age of six. He studied at the Municipal High School in Tel Aviv before serving in the IDF. He then went on to study acting at the Nissan Nativ Acting Studio.
