The Brisbane Bears were a professional Australian rules football club based in Brisbane, Queensland, now known as the Brisbane Lions. Granted a Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL), licence in 1986, it was the first privately owned club in the history of the competition and debuted in the 1987 VFL season. The club initially played home matches at Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Gold Coast (this stadium was redeveloped many years after the relocation of the Bears to facilitate home matches for expansion club the Gold Coast Suns). The Bad News Bears
''The Bad News Bears'' is a 1976 American sports comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Bill Lancaster. It stars Walter Matthau as an alcoholic ex-baseball pitcher who becomes a coach for a youth baseball team known as the Bears. Joh Bjelke-Petersen
Sir Johannes Bjelke-Petersen (13 January 191123 April 2005) was an Australian politician and farmer who served as premier of Queensland between 1968 and 1987, for almost 20 years, as state leader of the National Party (earlier known as the Country Party). Bjelke-Petersen was born in New Zealand's North Island to Danish immigrant parents. His family moved back to Australia when he was a child and settled on farming property near Kingaroy, Queensland. He left school at the age of 14 and went into farming. Bjelke-Petersen was elected to the Kingaroy Shire Council in 1946 and to the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the 1947 state election. He would serve in state parliament for over 40 years, holding the seats of Nanango (1947–1950) and Barambah (1950–1987). Jason Dunstall
Jason Hadfield Dunstall (born 14 August 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Dunstall is arguably the greatest Australian rules footballer to come from Queensland. Dunstall was one of the first of a generation of big-bodied lead-up full-forwards who could also out-wrestle opponents for position in a marking contest and was also an agile team-orientated player. He made his name as a full-forward during an era in which power forwards—including Tony Lockett, Gary Ablett Sr., Warwick Capper, Allen Jakovich, Simon Beasley, Saverio Rocca, John Longmire, Tony Modra and Peter Sumich—dominated the league goalkicking. Scott McIvor
Scott McIvor (born 9 August 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer. He made his V/AFL debut with Fitzroy in 1985 but played the majority of his career in his home state of Queensland with both the Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions. Born in Brisbane, Queensland, McIvor played his junior football for Wilston Grange. Prior to starting his VFL career, McIvor captained his home state Queensland in the Teal Cup. At the age of 17, he was recruited by Fitzroy and finished second in their 1986 best and fairest before winning it in 1987. The following season, he returned home to Queensland and joined the Brisbane Bears who were playing just their second season in the AFL. McIvor remained with the club for ten seasons until they merged with Fitzroy for the 1997 season. He finished with 138 games for the Bears; only Roger Merrett and Marcus Ashcroft managed more. Zane Taylor (footballer)
Zane Taylor (born 28 February 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1980s. He spent time as a forward and midfielder during his career but it was as a half back flanker that he made the official "Queensland Team of the Century" in 2003. Frank Dunell
Frank Dunell (born 17 March 1958) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Essendon Bombers and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) club Windsor-Zillmere, Dunell was recruited by the Essendon Bombers and made his senior VFL debut in 1979. Dunell played in many positions during his career, including half back, the wing, forward pocket and at full forward. He was first recruited as a high flying forward from Windsor Zillmere however his mosT consistent form was found when he played down back. He missed the 83 grand final against the Hawks along with Ron Andrews and both played major roles in winning the reserve grade final against Collingwood that day.
