Brazilian Hip Hop
Brazilian hip hop is a national music genre in Brazil. From its earliest days in the African-Brazilian communities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the genre has grown into a countrywide phenomena. Rappers, DJs, break dancers and graffiti artists are active across the complete spectrum of society blending Brazil's cultural heritage with American hip hop to form a contemporary musical fusion. History Precursors Many believe that even before the consolidation of the American hip hop scene, similar forms of rhythm and poetry were already manifesting in Brazil. The first form of poetic improvisation appeared in the northeast of the country (in the region of Teixeira, Paraíba) in the 19th century. Gerson King Combo
Gérson Rodrigues Côrtes, known as Gerson King Combo (30 November 1943 – 22 September 2020) was a Brazilian soul and funk singer-songwriter. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he began his career in performing on the variety program ''Hoje é Dia de Rock''. He founded and performed in the 1960s musical group Formula 7. He was also a key person in the 1970s counterculture movement Black Rio. In the mid-1970s, with the growth of the dance club scene in the Rio suburbs, the Black Rio movement gained national notoriety and, with the interest of the record companies in the new sound, Gérson managed to record his two most successful records - Gerson King Combo, 1977, and Gerson King Combo - Volume II, 1978 - achieving radio and dance club hits with "Mandamentos Black", "God Save the King", "Funk Brother Soul" and "Good Bye". Gospel Rap
Christian hip-hop (originally gospel rap, also known as Christian rap, gospel hip-hop or holy hip-hop) is a cross-genre of contemporary Christian music and hip-hop. It emerged from urban contemporary music and Christian media in the United States during the 1980s. Christian hip-hop music first emerged on record in 1982 with a track entitled "Jesus Christ (The Gospel Beat)" by Queens, New York artist McSweet. Samba-rap
Samba-rap is a fusion of samba and hip hop music. Rappin' Hood
Antônio Luiz Júnior (born November 7, 1971), better known by his stage name Rappin' Hood, is a Brazilian rapper, singer, record producer, activist and former television presenter. He is famous for being a pioneer of the samba-rap in the mid- to late 1990s. Biography Antônio Luiz Júnior was born on November 7, 1971, in the ''bairro'' of Heliópolis, São Paulo. Diagnosed with vitiligo early in his childhood, he began writing his first songs when he was circa 14 years old, also taking trumpet and cornet lessons. Lance Taylor (born April 17, 1957), also known as Afrika Bambaataa (), is a retired American DJ, rapper, and record producer. He is notable for releasing a series of genre-defining electro tracks in the 1980s that influenced the development of hip hop culture. Afrika Bambaataa is one of the originators of breakbeat DJing. Through his co-opting of his street gang Black Spades into the music and culture-oriented organization Universal Zulu Nation, he has helped spread hip hop culture throughout the world.
