Bentleigh is a suburb in Melbourne, Australia, 13 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Bentleigh recorded a population of 17,921 at the 2021 census. Within Bentleigh is the unbounded locality of Patterson. Neighbouring suburbs include Bentleigh East, Brighton East, Moorabbin and McKinnon. History Etymology Formerly known as East Brighton, the area was renamed Bentleigh in 1908 after Victorian Premier, Sir Thomas Bent This brought the suburb name in line with the name of the local railway station. 19th Century The first Post Office in the area opened on 1 July 1865 as Jasper Road. After the railway arrived it moved to near the station in 1882 and was named Brighton East. 20th Century A Patterson Post Office opened in 1948. Bentleigh Railway Station
Bentleigh railway station is a commuter railway station on the Frankston line, which is part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the south-eastern suburb of Bentleigh, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Bentleigh station is a below ground premium station, featuring three platforms, an island platform with two faces and one side platform. It opened on 19 December 1881, with the current station provided in 2016. Initially opened as East Brighton, the station was given its current name of Bentleigh on 1 May 1907. History Bentleigh station opened on 19 December 1881, when the railway line from Caulfield was extended to Mordialloc. Like the suburb itself, the station was named after Thomas Bent, former Premier of Victoria between 1904 and 1909. A goods siding once existed at the station. The electoral district of Bentleigh is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in southern Melbourne, including the suburbs of Bentleigh, Hampton East, McKinnon, and Moorabbin, and parts of Cheltenham, Bentleigh East, Brighton East and Ormond. It also includes the Moorabbin campus of the Monash Medical Centre. It lies within the Southern Metropolitan Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council. Bentleigh has usually been seen as a key marginal seat, lying at the 'point of the pendulum' needed to change government. It is considered a bellwether seat in Victoria, having elected a member of the governing party in all but two elections of its existence. The Bentleigh Football Netball Club is an Australian rules football and netball club located in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. The football team participates in the First Division Southern Football Netball League, based in the south and south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Dragon Club Coterie Group The Dragon Club was formed in 2013 by a group of 10 business men, all past players of the Bentleigh Football Club. The members, most of whom did not have time to dedicate to the club full-time, wanted to find a way to support the club in their own time and utilizing their skills. The Dragon club operates outside of the football / netball club and does not run the club, committee or football department. Bentleigh Secondary College
Bentleigh Secondary College is a coeducational public high school in Bentleigh East, Victoria, Australia. Established in 1956, it has been renamed several times before becoming Bentleigh Secondary College. Bentleigh Secondary College has recently been re-developed. In stage one of the building program, funded by the state government, a new performing arts centre, administration block, and sports stadium were built. The building that was previously the college library has been converted into a VCE centre. A new science block was also completed in late 2008, following the demolition of what was previously B-block and C-block. Bentleigh East is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Bentleigh East recorded a population of 30,159 at the 2021 census. History The suburb, like its neighbour Bentleigh, was named after the infamous Victorian politician Thomas Bent. Part of East Bentleigh was inside the original grant of land bought by English farmer and brewer, Henry Dendy, in 1841. He bought which was bounded on the west by Port Phillip Bay, then North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. East Bentleigh police station closed in the early 1990s. The building no longer remains standing on the corner of East Boundary Road and Omeo Court, near Centre Road (opposite the hotel).
