Belonidae
Needlefish (Family (biology), family Belonidae) or long toms are piscivorous bony fish, fishes primarily associated with very shallow marine habitats or the surface of the open sea. Some genera include species found in marine, brackish, and freshwater environments (e.g., ''Strongylura''), while a few genera are confined to freshwater rivers and streams, including ''Belonion'', ''Potamorrhaphis'', and ''Xenentodon''. Needlefish closely resemble North American freshwater gars (family Lepisosteidae) in being elongated and having long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth, and some species of needlefishes are referred to as gars or garfish despite being only distantly related to the true gars. In fact, the name "garfish" was originally used for the needlefish ''Belone belone'' in Europe and only later applied to the North American fishes by European settlers during the 18th century. Description Needlefish are slender, ranging from in length. They have a single dorsal fin, placed far ...

Tylosurus Crocodilus
The houndfish, or more specifically the crocodile needlefish (''Tylosurus crocodilus'') is a game fish of the family Belonidae, the needlefishes. It is the largest member of its family, growing up to in length and in weight. Taxonomy The houndfish was described as ''Belona crocodila'' by François Péron and Charles Alexandre Lesueur in 1821 with the type locality given as Mauritius. Two subspecies of the houndfish were recognised: *''Tylosurus crocodilus crocodilus'' (Péron & Lesueur 1821) *''Tylosurus crocodilus fodiator'' Jordan & Gilbert 1882 However, Fishbase now recognises ''T.c. fodiator'' as a valid species, '' Tylosurus fodiator'', the Mexican needlefish. Description A key way of distinguishing the houndfish from other members of the genus ''Tylosurus'' is that the houndfish's teeth point anteriorly when the fish is a juvenile. The teeth of other species are straight at all ages.Collette, B.B. 1999 Belonidae. Needlefishes. p. 2151–2161. In: K.E. Carpenter and V ...

Beloniformes
Beloniformes is an order composed of six families (and about 264 species) of freshwater and marine ray-finned fish: * Adrianichthyidae (ricefish and medakas) * Belonidae (needlefish) * Exocoetidae (flyingfishes) * Hemiramphidae (halfbeaks) * Scomberesocidae (sauries) * Zenarchopteridae (viviparous halfbeaks) With the exception of the Adrianichthyidae, these are streamlined, medium-sized fishes that live close to the surface of the water, feeding on algae, plankton, or smaller animals including other fishes. Most are marine, though a few needlefish and halfbeaks inhabit brackish and fresh waters. The order is sometimes divided up into two suborders, the Adrianichthyoidei and the Belonoidei, although this clade is referred to as Exocoetoidei in the 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World''. The Adrianichthyoidei contain only a single family, the Adrianichthyidae. Originally, the Adrianichthyidae were included in the Cyprinodontiformes and assumed to be closely relat ...

Lepisosteidae
Gars are an ancient group of ray-finned fish in the Family (biology), family Lepisosteidae. They comprise seven living species of fish in two genera that inhabit Fresh water, fresh, Brackish water, brackish, and occasionally marine waters of eastern North America, Central America and Cuba in the Caribbean, though extinct members of the family were more widespread. They are the only surviving members of the Ginglymodi, a clade of fish which first appeared during the Triassic period, over 240 million years ago, and are one of only two surviving groups of holosteian fish, alongside the bowfins, which have a similar distribution. Gars have elongated bodies that are heavily armored with ganoid scales, and fronted by similarly elongated jaws filled with long, sharp teeth. Gars are sometimes referred to as "garpike", but are not closely related to pike (fish), pike, which are in the fish family Esocidae. All of the gars are relatively large fish, but the alligator gar (''Atractost ...
