Bearsville, New York
Bearsville is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States, in the town of Woodstock. It is located along New York State Route 212, within Catskill State Park and just to the west of the hamlet of Woodstock. Bearsville was named not for the numerous local black bears, but for German peddler and storekeeper Christian Baehr, who built a store on the Sawkill Creek in 1839. Bearsville was the birth site of Grover Cleveland. Bearsville Records
Bearsville Records is a record label that was founded in 1970 by Albert Grossman. The label closed in 1984, two years before Grossman's death. Sally Grossman, Albert Grossman’s widow, was running Bearsville Records from 2010 until her death in March 2021, at the age of 81. Bearsville's initial distributor was Ampex Records. From 1972 until its folding, the label was distributed by Warner Bros. Records in most countries. In the UK it was distributed by Warner until 1979, and then Island until 1981; its last few British releases were licensed to independent labels Avatar and Lamborghini. Bearsville Records ceased active operations in 1985. Rhino Records currently distributes Bearsville catalog. Bearsville Sound Studio was an independent residential recording studio founded by Albert Grossman in the Bearsville, New York, Bearsville section of Woodstock, New York. From the late 1960s through the early 2000s, the studios were the site of notable recordings by numerous artists including Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf, Tesla (band), Tesla, R.E.M., Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews Band, Phish and others. History Background Albert Grossman, who was the manager of Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, first arrived in Bearsville in 1964 with his future wife, Sally Grossman, Sally, and Dylan via Dylan's station wagon, and went to work creating a retreat for the community of artists with whom he worked.
