Basque-American Culture In Oregon
The first Basque American, Basque immigrants to Oregon arrived in the 1880s. Most were sheepherders who had migrated north from Basques in California, California and Basques in Nevada, Nevada. Areas of Basque settlement include Arock, Oregon, Arock and Jordan Valley, Oregon, Jordan Valley in Malheur County, Oregon and a smaller number in Harney County, Oregon, Harney County. The Basque migration peaked in the 1920s and 1930s, only beginning to undergo decline in the 1940s. By the end of the 20th century, the Basque population shifted and now many live in eastern Oregon and the Portland metropolitan area. Basque Americans (, ) are Americans of Basque descent. According to the 2000 US census, there are 57,793 Americans of full or partial Basque descent. Ties to early American history Referring to the historical ties that existed between the Basque Country and the United States, some authors stress the admiration felt by John Adams, second president of the U.S., for the Basques' historical form of government. Adams, who on his tour of Europe visited Biscay, was impressed. Basques In California
The presence of Basques in California dates back four centuries. Basque explorers arrived in what is now California in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. There is a significant presence of Basque-Americans in the Bakersfield area. Many of Bakersfield's oldest and most historic restaurants are Basque, including Woolgrowers, Noriega's, Pyrenees, Benji's, and Narducci's. Arock, Oregon
Arock is an unincorporated community in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Ontario, OR– ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. Arock is along Arock Road, north of U.S. Route 95 between Jordan Valley and Rome. Jordan Creek flows near Arock and joins the Owyhee River just west of Arock. History Arock was supposedly named in 1922 for a rock bearing Native American petroglyphs in the vicinity. Arock post office was established in 1926 and serves ZIP Code 97902. The oldest building in Malheur County, Sheep Ranch Fort, is near Arock. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Jordan Valley is a city in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Ontario, OR– ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies along Jordan Creek, a tributary of the Owyhee River; the creek is named for a 19th-century prospector, Michael M. Jordan. The population was 130 at the 2020 census. History Indigenous peoples Northern Paiute people were the first in the area, frequenting nearby mountains and streambeds to find or follow food sources. When early settlers arrived, conflict developed over local resources, eventually escalating to the Snake War. The conflict lasted from 1864 to 1868 and left two thirds of the Paiutes dead.
