Barrio Sexto
Sexto (''Barrio Sexto'') is one of the 31 barrios of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Along with Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, and Quinto, Sexto is one of the municipality's six core urban barrios. Barrio Sexto used to be called Barrio Cantera. It was organized in 1878. Location Sexto is an urban barrio located in the southern section of the municipality, within the Ponce city limits, and north of the traditional center of the city, Plaza Las Delicias. The former name of barrio Sexto (Sixth) was barrio Cantera (Quarry) because there was a stone quarry in that region. At northeast of Plaza Las Delicias were located the "Baños Termales de Quintana" (Quintana Thermal Baths)The Quintana Baths were destroyed in the last decades of the 20th century to channelize Río Portugués as well as to build the PR-10 road from Ponce to Adjuntas. This list of barrios of Ponce consists of the 31 barrios in the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. With 31 barrios, Ponce is Puerto Rico's municipality with the largest number of barrios. Meaning of "barrio" In Puerto Rico, the term barrio has two very different meanings. Government, Officially, Ponce has 31 barrios; this is according to local, insular, and federal governments. Ismael Rivera
Ismael Rivera a.k.a. "Maelo" (October 5, 1931 – May 13, 1987), was a Puerto Rican composer and salsa singer. Early life Rivera was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, a sector of San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was the first of five children born to Luis and Margarita Rivera. His father, Luis, was a carpenter and his mother a housewife. As a child, Rivera was always singing and banging on cans with sticks. He received his primary education at the Pedro G. Goyco Elementary School and then went on to learn carpentry at a vocational school. He also shined shoes to help his family financially and, when he was 16 years old, he worked as a carpenter. During his free time he would hang around the corner with his best friend Rafael Cortijo and sing songs. Fania Records is a New York City, New York–based record label founded by Dominican-born composer and bandleader Johnny Pacheco and his American lawyer Jerry Masucci in 1964 in music, 1964. The label took its name from a popular luncheonette frequented by musicians in Havana, Cuba that Masucci frequented when he worked for a public relations firm there during the pre-Castro era. Fania is known for its promotion of salsa music. La Sonora Ponceña is a Puerto Rican salsa band, founded in 1954 by Enrique "Quique" Lucca Caraballo. Today Quique's son, Papo Lucca, directs the band. The band has stayed active for a remarkable amount of time, recording dozens of albums, including a 55th anniversary album. Singers included Tito Gómez. History Origin The history of La Sonora Ponceña is the history of Quique Lucca (December 12, 1912 – October 9, 2016), who was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico. Salsa (music)
Salsa music is a style of Latin American music, combining elements of Cuban and Puerto Rican influences. Because most of the basic musical components predate the labeling of salsa, there have been many controversies regarding its origin. Most songs considered as salsa are primarily based on son montuno and son cubano, with elements of cha-cha-chá, bolero, rumba, mambo, jazz, R&B, bomba, and plena. All of these elements are adapted to fit the basic Son montuno template when performed within the context of salsa. Originally the name salsa was used to label commercially several styles of Hispanic Caribbean music, but nowadays it is considered a musical style on its own and one of the staples of Hispanic American culture. Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez
Pedro Juan Rodríguez Ferrer (31 January 1933 – 1 December 2000), better known as Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, was a salsa singer born in Barrio Cantera, Ponce, Puerto Rico. His son, also named Pete Rodriguez, is also a salsa and jazz musician. His daughter, Cita Rodriguez, is also an accomplished salsa singer. Early career Rodríguez was a percussionist who started playing bongos at the age of five in his father's quartet ''El Conjunto Gondolero''. After his father's death, at age 12 he moved to The Bronx, New York, during the 1950s. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School and from The New York School of Printing.
