Bessie Bamber
Bessie Bamber ( 1870 – after 1910) was a British artist who specialised in paintings of domestic pets, particularly kittens and cats. Little is reported of her life, and it is not known if Bamber was her maiden or married name. She worked in Liverpool between the 1880s and about 1910; she was reportedly born in Birkenhead. A prolific artist who was most active between 1900 and 1910, Bessie Bamber worked in oils and specialised in painting cats, kittens and occasionally puppies. She preferred to work using stuffed animals rather than live ones. She usually painted on porcelain or opaline glass, and sometimes on a polished mahogany panel though most of her works are small in size (often about 9 inches by 6). Her works are mostly signed with a monogram "BB". There is no record of her exhibiting her paintings. Mary Hardie Bamber (''née'' Little; 18 January 1874 – 4 June 1938), often known as Ma Bamber, was a Scottish socialist, trade unionist, social worker, and suffragist. Her daughter Bessie Braddock was a prominent Labour Member of Parliament (MP). Bamber was active in Liverpool and nationally for the best part of fifty years, present at key moments in Merseyside labour history, in the forefront of several prominent disputes. As a Labour councillor and a Justice of the Peace she promoted the dissemination of contraceptive advice as a mechanism to empower women. Bamber Bridge is a large village in Lancashire, England, south-east of Preston, in the borough of South Ribble. The name derives from the Old English "bēam" and "brycg", which probably means "tree-trunk bridge". People who live in Bamber Bridge like to be known as Briggers. History Textiles By 1764 calico printing had been established in what was then a village; this was the first example of calico printing anywhere in Lancashire. Previously had been mainly carried out in the south of England, before spreading to Scotland and the northern counties. ''Bamboozle!'' was a quiz game featured on Channel 4 Teletext in the United Kingdom. It was originally part of Teletext's "Fun & Games" category, though the rest of the category had been discontinued for some years before Bamboozle! ended (due to the general discontinuation of all Teletext news and editorial content in December 2009). The last edition, themed around 'Ends and Lasts', appeared on Monday 14 December 2009. Bamber Gascoyne (the Younger)
Bamber Gascoyne of Childwall Hall, Lancashire (1758 – 17 January 1824), was a British politician. He was an ancestor of two British Prime Ministers, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, and Arthur Balfour. He was the son of Bamber Gascoyne (senior) and Mary Green. He was Member of Parliament for Liverpool from 1780 to 1796. He was succeeded as MP for Liverpool by his brother Isaac. He spoke in Parliament against the abolition of the slave trade, and led the opposition to the Sierra Leone settlement bill, which successfully incorporated the Sierra Leone Company in 1791. Bamber Gascoyne (the Elder)
Bamber Gascoyne of Childwall Hall, Lancashire (1725–1791), was an 18th-century English politician who sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain between 1761 and 1786. Gascoyne was the son of Sir Crisp Gascoyne and Margaret Bamber. After his education at Felsted School, he matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford, in 1743. Gascoyne served as member of Parliament for several constituencies including Maldon (1761–1763), Midhurst (1765–1768), and Truro (1774–1784). From 1779 to 1782 he was a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty in the administration of Lord North. He married Mary Green, daughter of Isaac Green, a Lancashire lawyer, and his wife Mary Aspinwall. Mike Bamber (16 October 1930 – 11 July 1988) was a British businessman and football executive. He was chairman of Brighton & Hove Albion for a period of more than ten years during the 1970s and 1980s during which time he oversaw the football club's promotion to the First Division of English football for the first time. John Belfield Bamber (8 June 1912 – 2000) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke City. Career Bamber was born in Preston and played for his local club, Preston North End. He failed to break into the team at Deepdale and left for non-league Fleetwood Town before signing for Stoke City in 1933. He made a perfect start to his Stoke career scoring on his debut against Leicester City in December. Despite this however, Bamber soon became used as a reserve player and he went on to spend six seasons at the Victoria Ground The Victoria Ground was the home ground of Stoke City from 1878 until 1997, when the club relocated to the Britannia Stadium after 119 years.
