Wakefulness
Wakefulness is a daily recurring brain state and state of consciousness in which an individual is conscious and engages in coherent cognition, cognitive and behavioral responses to the external world. Being awake is the opposite of being asleep, in which most external inputs to the brain are excluded from neural processing. Effects upon the brain The longer the brain has been awake, the greater the synchronous firing rates of cerebral cortex neurons. After sustained periods of sleep, both the speed and synchronicity of the neurons firing are shown to decrease. Another effect of wakefulness is the reduction of glycogen held in the astrocytes, which supply energy to the neurons. Studies have shown that one of sleep's underlying functions is to replenish this glycogen energy source. Behzad Ranjbaran (; born 1955, in Tehran, Iran) is a Persian composer, known for his virtuosic concertos and colorful orchestral music. Ranjbaran's music draws from his cultural roots, incorporating Persian musical modes and rhythms. Life and career Ranjbaran was born on July 1, 1955, In Tehran, Iran. He entered the Tehran Music Conservatory at the age of 9, studying the violin. In his teens while studying Western classical music, Ranjbaran began collecting folk music. Following his graduation, he immigrated to America in 1974. He studied at Indiana University, in Bloomington, and later at the Juilliard School in New York City where he obtained a DMA in music composition. His composition teachers at Juilliard were Vincent Persichetti, David Diamond, and Joseph Schwantner. Awakenings (festival)
Awakenings is the collective name of techno parties and festivals that have been organized in the Netherlands since 1997 by events agency Monumental Productions BV. The current Awakenings Summer Festival is one of the biggest techno events in the world. The parties sometimes have a theme that has to do with techno music, such as minimal, Detroit, schranz, Drumcode or Kne'deep. The venue used for indoor events is usually the Gashouder in Amsterdam, and the Spaarnwoude recreational area between Amsterdam and Haarlem for outdoor festivals. The name Awakenings has to do with the resurrection of Jesus. The first party was around Easter and organizer Rocco Veenboer realized that he did not know what the Easter party meant. Sébastien Japrisot (; 4 July 1931 – 4 March 2003) was a French author, screenwriter and film director. His pseudonym was an anagram of Jean-Baptiste Rossi, his real name. Renowned for subverting the rules of the crime genre, Japrisot broke down the established formulas "into their component pieces to re-combine them in original and paradoxical ways." Writing as Cate Tiernan, she is best known for her ''Sweep'' series, which follows the Wiccan adventures of a cast of high school students. Judith Berman (born 1958) is an American anthropologist and science fiction and fantasy writer. Biography Berman grew up in Moscow, Idaho, and read works from Golden Age science fiction during her childhood. She began writing and making up her own stories around the age of five or six. She graduated from Bennington College in 1979, where she majored in Anthropology, Russian, and comparative literature. After working as an editorial assistant at W.W. Norton, she received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. ''Awakenings'' is a 1973 Non-fiction, non-fiction book by Oliver Sacks. It recounts the life histories of those who had been victims of the 1920s encephalitis lethargica epidemic. Sacks chronicles his efforts in the late 1960s to help these patients at the Beth Abraham Hospital (now Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing) in the Bronx, New York City, New York. The treatment used the new drug L-DOPA, L-DOPA, with the observed effects on the patients' symptoms being generally dramatic but temporary.
