St. James-Assiniboia is a major community area in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As it encapsulates most of the city ward of St. James, which includes the major St. James Street, the area itself is often simply referred to "St. James." 2016 Canadian Census
The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census. Portage or portaging (Canadian English, CA: ; ) is the practice of carrying water craft or cargo over land, either around an obstacle in a river, or between two bodies of water. Omand's Creek
Omand's Creek is a stream that runs throughout Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Its surroundings vary, from prairie to box stores. It additionally runs through Omand Park and Bluestem Nature Park in the Wolseley area, into the Assiniboine River. History Omand's Creek is named after John Omand (1823–1905) who farmed near the mouth of the creek for 47 years. Before Omand lived on the land it was known as Catfish Creek. On June 19, 1816 Cuthbert Grant and the men who were with him rested on the bank of the creek before the Battle of Seven Oaks. In 1850 the land on the west side of the creek was granted by the Hudson's Bay Company to build St. James Church and Cemetery. In 1860 a bridge was built across Omand's Creek in order to improve access to the church. A battle between the Saulteaux and the Portage La Prairie Sioux was also fought between Sherbrook Street and Omand's Creek some time in the mid 1800s. Bruce Park
Bruce Park is a urban park located at 1966 Portage Avenue, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The park is bordered to the south by the Assiniboine River, to the east by Douglas Park Road, to the west by Deer Lodge Place, and to the north by Portage Avenue. The park has three footbridges that cross the Truro Creek, which runs through the park. Features of the park include formal flower gardens, grassland and forest naturalization areas, the A.W. Wolseley is a neighbourhood located within the West End, Winnipeg, West End of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is named for field marshal Sir Garnet Wolseley, a British Army officer who came to Manitoba in 1870 to suppress the Red River Rebellion. It is affectionately known as "The Granola Belt" of Winnipeg. Kevin Elvis Klein is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. A member of the Progressive Conservative Party, Klein has served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and is a former City of Winnipeg councilor. Political career Klein served as the Winnipeg City Councillor for Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood from 2018 to 2022. Klein also ran in the 2022 Winnipeg mayoral election, placing third. Assiniboia Downs
Assiniboia Downs is a Canadian horse race track on of land located in the Winnipeg suburb of St. James-Assiniboia. It is operated by the Manitoba Jockey Club and is the site of the annual Manitoba Derby. The track is located on the western edge of the city, near the intersection of the Perimeter Highway and Portage Avenue. It was opened on June 10, 1958, replacing the former Polo Park Racetrack, which was demolished to make way for Polo Park Shopping Centre. Thoroughbred racing season events run from May and end in September. Harness racing events operate during the winter months.
