Arion (gastropod)
''Arion'' is a genus of air-breathing land slugs in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. Most species of this Palearctic genus are native to the Iberian Peninsula. Species can be difficult to distinguish from one another upon cursory examination, because individuals of a species can vary in color and there are few obvious differences between taxa. The color of an individual can be influenced by its diet. Some ''Arion'' are known as pests, such as ''A. lusitanicus'' auct. non Mabille (= ''A. vulgaris''), which damages agricultural crops and ornamental plants, and ''A. rufus'', a familiar garden pest. ''Arion'' slugs are often transported internationally in shipments of plant products and mushrooms. ''Arion'' slugs have been identified in North America and Australia as invasive species An invasive species is an introduced species that harms its new environment. Invasive species adversely affect habitats and bioregions, causing ecological, environmental, and/or e ...

Arion Distinctus
''Arion distinctus'' is a species of air-breathing land slug in the family (biology), family Arionidae, sometimes known as the roundback slugs. It is a terrestrial molluscs, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc. Several common name, vernacular names exist, but it is unclear if they are much in use: brown soil slug, common garden slug, darkface arion, Mabille's orange-soled slug, April slug. Taxonomic background ''Arion hortensis'' was described by André Étienne d'Audebert de Férussac, Férussac in 1819. Only in the 1970s did the amateur malacologist Stella Davies discover that in Britain that name had been applied to three distinct species. Later the name ''Arion distinctus'' was used for the one of these species that Davies had provisionally called "form A". Jules François Mabille, Mabille's original 1868 description of ''A. distinctus'' included details (colouration, date of collection) that tended to indicate this species rather than ''Arion hortensis'' Sensu, s.s. No Ty ...

Arion Hortensis
''Arion hortensis'', also known by its common name the "garden slug", "small striped slug" or "black field slug" is a species of small air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. In Britain, the name ''Arion hortensis'' was previously applied to a species complex, consisting of this species plus ''Arion distinctus'' Mabille, 1868 and '' Arion owneii'' Davies, 1979. Here the name is used ''sensu stricto''. Description With slugs, it is often difficult to establish good criteria for identifying species using external features or internal features, as colouration can be quite variable, and the rather plastic anatomy makes diagnostic anatomical features difficult to establish. See the article on ''Arion distinctus'' for characters distinguishing that from this species. The clearest character is the structure at the entrance to the epiphallus. Spanish Slug
The Spanish slug (''Arion vulgaris'', but formerly widely referred to as ''Arion lusitanicus'' owing to a misidentification) is an air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial molluscs, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc, mollusk in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. Other vernacular names are Lusitanian slug, Iberian slug, and killer slug. It is a large, conspicuous slug, which has spread across much of Europe since the 1950s and now reached North America. It may attain high densities and be a serious horticultural and agricultural pest, and is considered an invasive species. The life cycle is annual, with adults appearing in summer and dying off before winter. Confusion over nomenclature The Spanish slug was identified as ''Arion lusitanicus'' when it was first reported as an invading species in France in 1956, and hence it is sometimes called the Lusitanian slug (e.g.). This was a case of misidentification. In slugs, it is often impossible to find external characters th ...

Arion Transsylvanus
''Arion transsylvanus'' is a species of terrestrial slug in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. It is a member of the '' Arion subfuscus'' species complex and known mostly from Transylvania in Romania, where it appears to be the only species of this complex. Description and identification Adult ''A. transsylvanus'' are 40–70 mm long. Like other members of the genus ''Arion'', they have a rounded end to the tail and the pneumostome is in the front half of the mantle. The colour varies even within a population from bright orange to dark brown. Lateral bands are often present but may be faint or absent. The mucus can be orange or colourless. A useful internal character is that the gonad sits above the digestive gland rather than buried mostly within it like the darker gonad of ''A. fuscus''. Distinguishing ''A. transsylvanus'' from both ''A. fuscus'' and ''A. subfuscus'' is that openings of the epiphallus, bursa duct, and oviduct into the genital atrium lie all along ...

Auctorum
Auctorum indicates that a name in botany and zoology is used in the sense of subsequent authors, and not in the sense as established by the original author. Its etymology derives from the Latin word for ''of authors'' (genitive plural), and is abbreviated auct. or auctt. Some species names have been used twice for different species so the author of the name needs to be identified. For example "''Leucospermum bolusii'' auct. Gandoger" for the species that was named as such by Gandoger. It is often used in conjunction with nec or non to indicate a misapplied name, e.g. "''Leucospermum bolusii'' auct. non Gandoger" would mean the species not named by Gandoger. It may be qualified to indicate the number of authors, e.g. auctorum multorum (abbreviated auct. mult.), Latin for ''of many authors'', indicating that many subsequent authors used a name in a different sense to the original author, and also by non to give auctorum non (auct. non), to indicate that a following author is not the ...
