Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty In Wales
There are five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in Wales, known from November 2023 as ''National Landscapes'' (). AONBs are areas of countryside that have been designated for statutory protection, due to their significant landscape value, by initially the Government of the United Kingdom and later Welsh devolved bodies. Of the current five areas designated, four are wholly in Wales, with another spanning the Wales-England border, and in total AONBs account for 4% of Wales' land area. The responsibility of designating areas in recognition of their national importance is devolved to Wales and performed by Natural Resources Wales (formerly the Countryside Council for Wales), on behalf of the Welsh Government. John Gordon Dower (2 September 1900 – 3 October 1947) was an English civil servant and architect, who, as secretary of the Standing Committee on National Parks, produced in 1945 the first post-war official report which set out what National Parks in England and Wales should be like. Early life Dower was born in Ilkley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in September 1900. His father was a Methodist lay preacher and was a director of a steel firm in Leeds. Dower was educated at a local school in Ilkley and he then studied for a degree in architecture at St John's College, Cambridge. Sir Arthur Lawrence Hobhouse (15 February 1886 – 20 January 1965) was an English Liberal politician who is best remembered as the architect of the system of national parks of England and Wales. He was a Member of Parliament for Wells from 1923 to 1924 and chairman of the Somerset County Council 1940 to 1947. Early life Hobhouse was the son of Liberal politician and MP Henry Hobhouse and the brother of peace activist, prison reformer, and religious writer Stephen Henry Hobhouse. Arthur Hobhouse was educated at Eton College, St Andrews University and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in Natural Sciences.
