Balanus
''Balanus'' is a genus of barnacles in the family Balanidae of the subphylum Crustacea. This genus is known in the fossil record from the Jurassic to the Quaternary periods (age range: from 189.6 to 0.0 million years ago.). Fossil shells within this genus have been found all over the world. Description The bodies of these organisms are totally enclosed by a stony gray-whitish shell. The size of these shells ranges from 5 millimeters to 10 centimeters. They take the form of a cone consisting of six plates fixed on the rocks. The active animal can only be observed within the water when the shell opens and the barnacles expose two branched appendages ( cirri ) regularly hitting the water to catch food. They mainly feed on plankton. Habitat These barnacles can be found in coastal areas at low shallow depth, although they can also be seen living out of the water. They commonly colonize stones, rocks and shells. They are found in abundance on the shells of mussels. Species Species ...

Megabalanus
''Megabalanus'' is a genus of barnacles in the family Balanidae. Members of the genus grow to in length and inhabit the lower intertidal zone. Morphology ''Megabalanus'' is an acorn barnacle, a sessile crustacean that secretes a calcium carbonate shell consisting of five plates. It reaches up to in height . Ecology Like other barnacles, they are suspension feeders, grabbing particulate matter from the water column overhead. ''M. tintinnabulum'' has a worldwide distribution and is commonly found on wave-beaten shores, in the lower intertidal zone. They tend to grow in clusters of around 12 individuals. Other species are more select, such as ''M. californicus'' of tidal habitats in California and the greater North American Pacific Coast. While many barnacles deal with competition for space by organisms such as limpets and mussels by growing many organisms close together in colonies, ''Megabalanus'' responds by rapidly growing to a very large size. Their large size also hel ...

Balanus Glandula
''Balanus glandula'' (commonly known as the North American acorn barnacle or common acorn barnacle) is one of the most common barnacle species on the Pacific coast of North America, distributed from the U.S. state of Alaska to Bahía de San Quintín near San Quintín, Baja California. They are commonly found in the upper intertidal zone on mussels, rocks and pier pilings. They can obtain oxygen from both water and air. This acorn barnacle is a moderate-sized one with a diameter of up to . The shell is formed by overlapping plates and has a calcareous basis. It has more the shape of a cylinder than the shape of a cone. The white operculum has heavily ridged walls. It can live up to ten years. It has been intensely studied in recent years as a model species for linking physical oceanography and population genetics (or phylogeography) surveys. This species was introduced to the shores of Argentina in the 1960s, and has become an invasive species An invasive species is an ...
