Arc Infrastructure
Arc Infrastructure, formerly Brookfield Rail and WestNet Rail, is a rail infrastructure manager and access provider in Western Australia with a long-term lease on the network from the Government of Western Australia. It operates approximately 5,500 km of standard, narrow and dual gauge rail infrastructure in the southern half of the state. History In December 2000, the State Government privatised Westrail, with the Australian Railroad Group, a 50/50 joint venture between Genesee & Wyoming and Wesfarmers, the successful bidder. Included in the sale was a 49-year lease on the below rail infrastructure network. This part of the business was rebranded as WestNet Rail. On 1 June 2006, Australian Railroad Group was sold with the above rail rolling stock and terminal assets passing to QR National, and the below rail infrastructure business to Babcock & Brown Infrastructure. Eastern Railway (Western Australia)
The Eastern Railway is the main railway route between Fremantle railway station, Fremantle and Northam railway station, Western Australia, Northam in Western Australia. It opened in stages between 1881 and 1893. The line continues east to Kalgoorlie as the Eastern Goldfields Railway. It is part of the Sydney–Perth rail corridor, interstate standard gauge railway between Perth and the rest of Australia. Initial section The first sod of the Fremantle-Guildford Railway was turned by Harry Ord, Governor Ord at Guildford, Western Australia, Guildford on 3 June 1879. The National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide, South Australia is the largest under-cover railway museum in Australia. More than 100 major exhibits, mainly from the South Australian Railways (SAR) and Commonwealth Railways and their successor, Australian National, are displayed at its site. A large archival collection of photographs of those railways and records created by them is also managed by the museum. The museum operates with a large number of volunteers. History Mile End, 1964–1988 In 1963, a group of rail preservationists asked the South Australian Railways Commissioner to allocate land near the site of the former Mile End locomotive depot to hold a small collection of withdrawn steam locomotives. Leonora, Western Australia
Leonora is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located northeast of the state capital, Perth, and north of the city of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Kalgoorlie. History The first European explorer to visit the area was John Forrest in 1869. On 21 June 1869 Forrest's party made camp near a conspicuous hill, which Forrest named Mount Leonora, after his six-year-old niece Frances (Fanny) Leonora Hardey. In 1895, gold was discovered in the area by prospector Edward "Doodah" Sullivan at the Johannesburg lease just north of the current townsite. In the following two years a number of rich finds resulted in rapid development of the area. The Sons of Gwalia gold mine brought Leonora to the attention of the world. Geraldton Railway Station
Geraldton railway station was originally the terminus of Northampton lines in Western Australia. It is located in Geraldton. History On 26 July 1879, the original Geraldton station opened as part of the Northampton line. It was the first government railway station in Western Australia. With the discovery of gold in the Murchison River, a new station was built off Durlacher Street. On 8 August 1900, it became the Geraldton Mechanic's Institute Library, with a second storey added in 1908. In 1975, the library was shifted to a new location and in 1979 the building was handed over to the WA Museum. When the WA Museum relocated to its new premises in 2000, the old station building lay vacant until restored in 2014 as the City of Greater Geraldton Visitor Centre. First Albanese Ministry
The first Albanese ministry was the 73rd ministry of the Government of Australia. It was led by the country's 31st Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. The Albanese ministry succeeded the second Morrison ministry, which resigned on 23 May 2022 following the federal election that took place on 21 May which saw Labor defeat Scott Morrison's Liberal–National Coalition. Although counting was still underway on election night, most media outlets projected that due to severe losses by Morrison's Liberal/National Coalition, Labor was the only party that could realistically form even a minority government. Accordingly, Morrison conceded defeat to Albanese late on election night. ABC Midwest & Wheatbelt is an ABC Local Radio station based in Geraldton. The station broadcasts to the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions of Western Australia. This includes the towns of Meekatharra Northam and Dalwallinu. The station broadcasts through three main AM transmitters. 6GN on 828 AM, 6NM on 1215 AM and 6DL on 531 AM. There are also a number of low power FM transmitters. When local programs are not broadcast the station is a relay of 720 ABC Perth.
