Andenne
Andenne (; ) is a city and Municipalities of Belgium, municipality of Wallonia located in the Namur Province, province of Namur, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Andenne had a total population of 25,240. The total area is 86.17 km² which gives a population density of 292 inhabitants per km². The municipality, and the central city, extend on both sides of the river Meuse. The municipality consists of the following Deelgemeente#Belgium, districts: Andenne, Bonneville, Namur, Bonneville, Coutisse, Landenne, Maizeret, Namêche, Sclayn, Seilles, Thon-Samson, and Vezin, Wallonia, Vezin. History The city is symbolized by a bear, originating from the legend that saw Charles Martel, while still a child, use a hammer to kill a bear that terrorized the inhabitants. Collegiate Church Of Saint Begga
The Collegiate Church of Saint Begga () is a collegiate church in Andenne, Belgium. Founded in the 7th century, the currently visible church dates from 1770 to 1775 and was designed by architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez. History The church traces its origins to the 7th century, when an abbey was founded in Andenne by Saint Begga. By the 11th century, the abbey was transformed into a collegiate church, eventually developing into an aristocratic community centred around the church. Eventually, the living quarters became more monastic in character and had their churches; by the 18th century, there were seven churches and corresponding communities, surrounded by a wall. The current church replaced these structures and was built 1770–1775 to designs by architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez. Begga
Saint Begga (also Begue, Beghe, Begge) (615 – 17 December 693) was the daughter of Pepin of Landen, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, and his wife Itta. She is also the grandmother of Charles Martel, who is the grandfather of Charlemagne. Life The daughter of Pepin of Landen and his wife, Itta, Begga was the older sister of St Gertrude of Nivelles. She married Ansegisel, son of Arnulf, Bishop of Metz, and had Pepin of Heristal and Martin of Laon. Ansegisel was killed sometime before 679, slain in a feud by his enemy Gundewin. Begga made a pilgrimage to Rome and upon her return, she took the veil, she had seven churches built at Andenne on the Meuse. There she spent the rest of her days as abbess. Sclayn
Sclayn (; ) is a town of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Andenne, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. It is located by the river Meuse. Sclayn developed around the collegiate church dedicated to Saint Maurice. The church was founded by monks from Kornelimünster Abbey around 1072, and a college of canons was founded here by Emperor Henry IV in 1106. The Romanesque church is still preserved in the town, and contains a large crucifix from the 14th century, among other historical furnishings.
