Ancistrini
Ancistrini is a tribe of catfishes of the family Loricariidae. Most are restricted to tropical and subtropical South America, but there are also several genus ('' Ancistrus'', '' Chaetostoma'', '' Hemiancistrus'' and '' Lasiancistrus'') in southern Central America. Taxonomy Ancistrini have previously been considered a loricariid subfamily. However, the subfamily Hypostominae would be paraphyletic if Ancistrinae continued to be recognized. To continue recognizing the monophyly of this group while returning it to Hypostominae, Hypostominae was broken into several tribes. Pterygoplichthyini is sister to the tribe Ancistrini, which shares the derived presence of an evertible patch of plates on the cheek. Description Most Ancistrini species (except for some '' Pseudancistrus'' and '' Spectracanthicus'') can be separated from all other loricariids except the Pterygoplichthyini by the presence of evertible cheek plates with hypertrophied odontode Odontodes, or dermal teeth, are hard ...

Peckoltia
''Peckoltia'' is a genus of small South American Loricariidae, armored suckermouth catfishes. Many of these fish are popular aquarium fish. Taxonomy ''Peckoltia'' is a Basal (phylogenetics), basal genus within the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. This genus is paraphyly, paraphyletic. At this point, many undescribed taxon, undescribed species remain. Many of the possibly undescribed species have an identification through the L-number system. ''Peckoltia'' species can be distinguished from most other in the genera in the tribe Ancistrini by having a lateral ridge on the opercle that usually has no odontodes and the teeth on their upper jaw (dentary) forming an angle under 90 degrees; while some genera also have an angled dentary, ''Peckoltia'' species lack synapomorphy, synapomorphies of these genera. This genus and the closely related ''Hemiancistrus'' may be synonym (taxonomy), synonymous, as neither genus is supported by synapomorphies. Generally, ''Peckoltia'' a ...

Ancistrus
''Ancistrus'' is a genus of nocturnal freshwater fish in the family Loricariidae of order Siluriformes, native to freshwater habitats in South America and Panama. Fish of this genus are common in the aquarium trade where they are known as bushynose or bristlenose catfish. In the aquarium hobby they are often referred to as bushynose or bristlenose plecos instead, but this may lead to confusion as "pleco" usually is used for ''Hypostomus plecostomus'' and its allies and is often used as a catchall term for any loricariids remotely resembling that species. Taxonomy The type species is ''Ancistrus cirrhosus''. This genus is the largest genus within the tribe Ancistrini. The name ancistrus derives from the Ancient Greek ''agkistron'' "hook" – a reference to the form of the cheek odontodes. The genera ''Pristiancistrus'', ''Thysanocara'' and ''Xenocara'' are now synonyms of ''Ancistrus''. Description ''Ancistrus'' species show all the typical features of the Loricariidae ...

Dekeyseria
''Dekeyseria'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes native to tropical South America. Species There are currently six recognized species in this genus: * '' Dekeyseria amazonica'' Rapp Py-Daniel, 1985 * '' Dekeyseria brachyura'' ( Kner, 1854) * '' Dekeyseria niveata'' ( La Monte, 1929) * '' Dekeyseria picta'' ( Kner, 1854) * '' Dekeyseria pulchra'' (Steindachner, 1915) * '' Dekeyseria scaphirhyncha'' ( Kner, 1854) Taxonomy ''Dekeyseria'' was first described with ''D. amazonica'' as type species in 1985 by Rapp Py-Daniel. Later, ''Zonancistrus'' was described for ''D. brachyura'', ''D. picta'', and ''D. pulchra''. However, this distinction was based on colouration, which is not a useful characteristic in diagnosing genera in loricariids; other genera such as ''Hypancistrus'' and '' Pseudolithoxus'' also exhibit a range of colouration patterns. Though ''Dekeyseria'' is not diagnosed by any unique characteristic, it is still a well-diagnosed genus. Distribution ''Dekeyseri ...

Hemiancistrus
''Hemiancistrus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes. These species are native to South America. The taxonomy of this genus is complex and unclear, and major work has to be done. Many of these fish are popular aquarium fish. Taxonomy ''Hemiancistrus'' is a genus within the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. This genus has long been used as a "dump" for Loricariid species; fish with unclear relationships have been classified as members of this genus. As such, this taxon is not monophyletic. At this point, many undescribed species remain. This genus and the closely related ''Peckoltia'' may be synonymous, as neither genus is supported by synapomorphies. ''Hemiancistrus'' species differ from other members of the ''Panaque'' clade lacking the synapomorphies of the other genera and having the dentaries meeting at an angle greater than 120°; in ''Peckoltia'' species, the dentaries meet at less than 90° Generally, ''Peckoltia'' are considered to be those that ...

Lasiancistrus
''Lasiancistrus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes. They are native to South America and Panama. Taxonomy ''Lasiancistrus'' was first described as a subgenus of ''Ancistrus'' in 1904, including ''A. heteracanthus'', ''A. pictus'', ''A. mystacinus'', and ''A. guacharote''. Later, it was raised to genus level, and several unrelated species were included. Many of these species have since been moved to other genera, such as '' Pseudolithoxus''. Most ''Lasiancistrus'' species had been described from few specimens; the genus was revised in 2005, synonymizing many of the existing species into four species, ''L. caucanus'', ''L. guacharote'', ''L. heteracanthus'', and ''L. schomburgkii''. ''L. maracaiboensis'' and ''L. mystacinus'' are synonyms of ''L. guacharote''. ''L. castelnaui'', ''L. caquetae'', ''L. guapore'', ''L. multispinis'', ''L. pictus'', and ''L. scolymus'' are synonyms of ''L. schomburgkii''. ''L. planiceps'', ''L. mayoloi'', and ''L. volcanensis'' are synonyms ...

Lithoxus
''Lithoxus lithoides'' is a species of armored catfish native to Guyana and Suriname where it is found in stony rivulets of the Essequibo and upper Correntyne River basins. It can be found clinging to rocks in rapidly moving water. This species grows to a length of SL. It is the only species in its genus. Taxonomy ''Lithoxus'' is supported as a monophyletic sister to ''Exastilithoxus''. Together, these two genera form a well-supported clade In biology, a clade (), also known as a Monophyly, monophyletic group or natural group, is a group of organisms that is composed of a common ancestor and all of its descendants. Clades are the fundamental unit of cladistics, a modern approach t .... Pseudancistrus
''Pseudancistrus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes native to South America. Taxonomy ''Pseudancistrus'' is a genus in the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. It was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1862, and redescribed by Jonathan Armbruster in 2004. Currently, there are 19 recognized species distributed in northern South America, with the inclusion of the genera ''Lithoxancistrus'', the species formerly known as ''Hemiancistrus megacephalus'', as well as the recently described ''Pseudancistrus corantijniensis''. There is no single morphological feature which distinguishes the group from related genera. Despite this, ''Pseudancistrus'' is generally recognized as a monophyletic group. Within the genus there is what is called the ''P. barbatus'' group. This group comprises Guyanese derived ''Pseudancistrus'' bearing hypertrophied odontodes along the snout and nonevertible cheek plates. It includes the five species ''P. barbatus'', ''P. corantijniensis'', ''P ...

Parancistrus
''Parancistrus'' is a small genus of suckermouth armored catfishes native to South America. Taxonomy Three species - ''Hypostomus aurantiacus'', ''H. nigricans'' and ''H. vicinus'' - were described by François Louis de la Porte, comte de Castelnau in 1855. ''Parancistrus'' was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1862 and ''P. aurantiacus'' designated as type. Later, ''P. nigricans'' and ''P. vicinus'' were deemed to be synonyms of ''P. aurantiacus'', making ''P. aurantiacus'' the only species of ''Parancistrus'' until ''P. nudiventris'' was described in 2005. Species There are currently two recognized species in this genus: * '' Parancistrus aurantiacus'' ( Castelnau, 1855) * '' Parancistrus nudiventris'' Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon, 2005 Appearance and anatomy ''Parancistrus'' is unique among loricariids due to the presence of fleshy folds on the naked area around the dorsal fin and at the pectoral fin points insertion in the breeding males. Breeding males also have elongated odonto ...

Panaque
The genus ''Panaque'' contains a small number of small to medium-sized South American Loricariidae, suckermouth armoured catfishes that are notable for being among the very few vertebrates that Xylophagy, feed extensively on wood. In addition, algae and aufwuchs are an important part of the diet, and they use their rasping teeth to scrape this from rocks. These fish are also popular aquarium fish, where the sound of scraping as these fish forage for food is easily audible. Taxonomy ''Scobinancistrus'' and ''Panaqolus'' are sometimes considered to be subgenera of this genus. Species There are currently seven recognized species in this genus: * ''Panaque armbrusteri'' * ''Panaque bathyphilus'' * ''Panaque cochliodon'' * ''Panaque nigrolineatus'' (Royal panaque) * ''Panaque schaeferi'' * ''Panaque suttonorum'' (Blue-eye panaque) * ''Panaque titan'' Etymology The name ''Panaque'' is a Latinisation of a native Venezuelan name for these fish. It is pronounced "pan ack" in Brita ...
