The University of Southampton (abbreviated as ''Soton'' in post-nominal letters) is a public university, public research university in Southampton, England. Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom. The university has seven campuses. Mark Smith (physicist)
Mark Edmund Smith, (born March 1963) is a British physicist, academic, and academic administrator. He specialises in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and materials physics. Since October 2019, he has been the President and Vice-Chancellor of University of Southampton, having previously held the office of Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, and Professor of Solid State NMR in its Department of Chemistry since 2012. He has previously lectured at the University of Kent and the University of Warwick. Early life and education Smith was born and brought up in Suffolk, England. Christopher Snowden
Sir Christopher Maxwell Snowden, (born 1956) is a British electronic engineer and academic. He was the former Vice-Chancellor of Surrey University (20052015), and of the University of Southampton (20152019). Donald Nutbeam , also known as Don Nutbeam, is a British-Australian public health scientist and academic known for his work on health promotion and public health policy. Nutbeam serves as executive director of Sydney Health Partners and professor of public health at the University of Sydney. Howard Newby
Sir Howard Joseph Newby (born 10 December 1947) is a British sociologist. He was appointed Chancellor (education)#Vice-chancellor, vice-chancellor of the University of Liverpool in 2008 and retired in December 2014. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1994 to 2001. He was appointed as the vice-chancellor of the University of the West of England (UWE), from March 2006. After 15 months at UWE he moved to the University of Liverpool and was almost immediately put on "gardening leave" at UWE for the duration of his year-long notice period, with the then deputy vice-chancellor, Steve West (university administrator), Steve West, acting up to the VC role before his subsequent substantive appointment. Gordon Higginson
Sir Gordon Robert Higginson (8 November 1929 – 5 November 2011) was an English engineer and academic who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1985 to 1994. He was co-author of the standard text on hydrodynamic lubrication and the Higginson Report on A levels. Early life and education Higginson was born in Leeds in 1929. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and the University of Leeds from which he received the degrees of BSc and PhD, both in Mechanical Engineering. Career Higginson worked briefly for the Ministry of Supply and was then appointed Lecturer at University of Leeds in 1956. In 1962 Higginson became an associate professor at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham and in 1965 he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering in what is now the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at the University of Durham. John Roberts (historian)
John Morris Roberts (14 April 1928 – 30 May 2003) was a British historian with many published works. From 1979 to 1985, he was vice chancellor of the University of Southampton, and from 1985 to 1994, he was warden of Merton College, Oxford. He also wrote and presented the BBC TV series '' The Triumph of the West'', first broadcast in 1985. Laurence Gower
Laurence Cecil Bartlett Gower (29 December 1913 – 25 December 1997) known as 'Jim' and universally credited as "LCB Gower" in his writings, was a lawyer and academic who was Vice Chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1971–79. Early life He was born in Forest Gate, London (then part of Essex) and educated at Lindisfarne College. He then attended University College, London graduating LLB with first class honours in 1933 and LLM in 1934. He qualified as a solicitor in 1937. War service He served in the army throughout World War II initially in the Royal Artillery (RA) as a Private where he served under Sir Mortimer Wheeler. Kenneth Mather
Sir Kenneth Mather CBE FRS (22 June 1911 – 20 March 1990) was a British geneticist and botanist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1949, and won its Darwin Medal in 1964. He was the second vice chancellor of the University of Southampton, serving from 1965 to 1971. He was instrumental in persuading the University Grants Committee to establish a new Medical School at the university. Early life He was born in Nantwich, Cheshire. His father, Richard Mather, was a furniture-maker in Nantwich, but originally came from Yorkshire. In 1915 he attended the Church of England boys' elementary school in Nantwich. He won a county scholarship in 1922 to Nantwich and Acton grammar school.
