Altoona is a town in Etowah County (and a small portion of Blount County) in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2020 census, the population was 948. History Altoona had its start in the year 1900 as a mining town, and was named for another coal town, Altoona, Pennsylvania. A post office has been in operation at Altoona since 1900. It incorporated in 1908. Geography Altoona is located in western Etowah County at (34.029259, -86.320687). The town extends west into Blount County. It is located in the Murphree Valley at the base of Altoona Mountain. Straight Mountain is a small, narrow ridge which runs nearly through the center of the town. Alabama State Route 132 (Main Street) leads southwest to Oneonta, the Blount County seat, and northeast towards Gadsden via U.S. Route 278. Altoona is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States, and part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The population was 19,565 at the 2020 census. It is home to the Adventureland amusement park and Prairie Meadows horse racing track and casino. History Anthony Yant first settled in what is now Altoona in 1854, the same year Gilbert T. Taylor settled there. The land was originally surveyed in 1847 and put up for sale by the US government in 1848, but it took six years to sell. After many sales between different families, the Davis family ended up with the land on February 1, 1868. The Davises hired surveyor Julian B. Bausman to lay out the city. Altoona is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, approximately 27 miles northwest of the town of Cathlamet. The population was 39 as of the 2010 census. The CDP includes the communities of Carlson Landing and Dahlia. History Altoona was one of six fish-buying stations and canneries located within a six-mile stretch of the Columbia River in the Grays Bay area. Before the decline of the Columbia River salmon industry during the 1940s, 39 canneries were operating along the lower Columbia River. Altoona was named after Altona, a city in Germany and a major fish-processing city on the Elbe River, by a Danish immigrant named Hans Petersen. The city is a railroad terminal on the Union Pacific Railroad. History The settlement of Altoona began in 1881 when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway selected the site for a new terminal to replace the overcrowded existing terminal in Eau Claire. The railroad had originally planned to put the new terminal in Fall Creek, but the city of Eau Claire lobbied for a site closer to the existing one, and representatives from Eau Claire and the railroad walked the tracks from Fall Creek to Eau Claire to determine a suitable site.
