Altmarkkreis Salzwedel
Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is a district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the districts Gifhorn, Uelzen, Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony, and the districts of Stendal and Börde (district). History The Altmark is a historical region that covers the territory of this district as well as parts of the neighbouring district of Stendal. In the 10th century AD, it was the eastern border province of the Holy Roman Empire; castles were built here in order to move the borders eastwards. The Altmark was a swampy and heavily contested region for centuries. In the 12th century, many swamps were drained, and the strongholds became small towns. In the Late Middle Ages, many towns were members of the Hanseatic League. Due to the Thirty Years' War the Altmark was completely devastated in the 17th century. Salzwedel
Salzwedel (, officially known as Hansestadt Salzwedel; Low German: ''Soltwedel'') is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is the capital of the district (''Kreis'') of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, and has a population of approximately 21,500. Salzwedel is located on the German Timber-Frame Road. Arendsee (lake)
The Lake Arend is a natural lake in the Altmark region, northern Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is 23.3 m above sea level, and its area is 5.14 km², its depth nearly 50 m. Diesdorf is a municipality (''Flecken'') in the district Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Geography Diesdorf is situated in the western Altmark about east of the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, which between 1945 and 1990, was part of the inner German border, and about southwest of Salzwedel. Gardelegen
Gardelegen (; nds, Garlä) is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated on the right bank of the Milde, 20 m. W. from Stendal, on the main line of railway Berlin-Hanover. History Gardelegen has a Roman Catholic and three Evangelical churches, a hospital, founded in 1285, and a high-grade school. There are considerable manufactures, notably agricultural machinery and buttons, and its beer has a great reputation. Gardelegen was founded in the 10th century (first named 1196). The castle ''Isenschnibbe'' was owned by the House of Alvensleben from 1378 until 1857. On the neighboring heath Margrave Louis I. of Brandenburg gained, in 1343, a victory over Otto the Mild of Brunswick. In 1358 Gardelegen became a city of the Hanse.
