Anthony Alsop
Anthony Alsop was born about 1670 and died in Winchester on 10 June 1726. He was a clergyman and Neo-Latin poet who sided with the Tory Party at the end of the Stuart era. His poetry was admired at the time but was eventually forgotten until a recent interest in such work brought him to notice again. Life Alsop was born at Darley Dale in Derbyshire and educated at Westminster School. Going on to Christ Church, Oxford, in 1690, he took the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in 1695 and Master of Arts in 1697. While there he gained a reputation for his elegant Latin verse, some of it produced for public university occasions, some for private circulation, and some Jacobite in spirit. His speciality was the witty verse epistle, most often using the Sapphic stanza. In 1698 Alsop edited a selection of Aesop’s Fables in Latin verse, ''Fabularum Aesopicarum Delectus''. George Allsopp (British Politician)
George Higginson Allsopp (28 March 1846 – 9 September 1907) was an English brewer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1906. Biography Allsopp was born at Burton-on-Trent, the son of Henry Allsopp, head of the brewery firm of Samuel Allsopp & Sons and his wife Elizabeth Tongue. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge and entered the family brewery. Between 1868 and 1871 he appeared in cricket matches for Worcestershire, although they did not qualify as first class. Allsopp was a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Staffordshire and Derbyshire. He was at one time chairman of the Burton-on-Trent School Board Allsopp stood unsuccessfully for parliament at Droitwich in 1880. At the 1885 general election, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Worcester. He held the seat until he retired from politics at the 1906 election. Herbert Allsopp
The Hon. Captain Herbert Tongue Allsopp (5 December 1855 – 31 January 1920) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Cambridge University. Allsopp was the son of the brewer Henry Allsopp, 1st Baron Hindlip. He was educated at Cheltenham College, and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He played five matches for Cambridge University in 1876, including the Varsity match which Cambridge won. His highest score of 22 came when playing for Cambridge University in the match against Gentlemen of England. His best bowling of 3/15 came when playing for Cambridge University in the match against Marylebone Cricket Club. He played for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1877 and for Worcestershire County Cricket Club against MCC in 1880, but the matches were not given First Class status. Frederic Allsopp
The Hon. Frederic Allsopp (21 September 1857 – 20 December 1928) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Marylebone Cricket Club in 1884. Allsopp was born at Hindlip Hall, Worcestershire, the son of the brewer Henry Allsopp, 1st Baron Hindlip. He was educated at Cheltenham College. In 1884 he played two first-class cricket matches for Marylebone Cricket Club His highest score of 34 came when playing for Marylebone Cricket Club in the match against Derbyshire County Cricket Club. His best bowling of 1/8 came in the same match. He was a member of I Zingari and in 1911 he also played two games for Worcestershire second XI which were both against Warwickshire second XI. Robert Alsop
Robert Alsop (1814 – March 25, 1871) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Trinity Bay in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1866 to 1871 as a Liberal and then anti-Confederate. He was a partner in the mercantile and shipping company R. Alsop and Company based in St. John's. Alsop was first elected in a by-election held in 1866. He served in the Executive Council as chairman of the Board of Works. James Allsop
James Leslie Bain Allsop (born 7 April 1953) is an Australian judge, currently serving as a foreign Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. He was the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, in office from 1 March 2013 to 6 April 2023. He was also previously President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal, where he presided from 2 June 2008 to 28 February 2013. In 2024, he was appointed as an International Judge to the Singapore International Commercial Court. Education Allsop attended Sydney Grammar School and completed year 12 in 1970. George Waters Allsopp
George Waters Allsopp (1769 – September 28, 1837) was a seigneur, businessman and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in 1769, probably at Quebec City, the son of George Allsopp, and studied at Eton College near London. He returned to Quebec in 1785 and trained in his father's business which was based in Quebec City and in the seigneury of Jacques-Cartier. In 1794, he was named justice of the peace. He purchased his father's grist mills and part of the seigneury in 1795. Allsopp was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Buckinghamshire in 1796. He inherited part of the seigneury of Auteuil when his father died in 1805. He served in the local militia during the War of 1812, becoming lieutenant-colonel. Joseph Wright Alsop IV (April 2, 1876 – March 17, 1953) was an American politician and father of Joseph Wright Alsop V and Stewart Alsop. He served in the Connecticut General Assembly and ran for Congress on the Bull Moose Party ticket. Early life and education Alsop was born on April 2, 1876, in Middletown, Connecticut, to parents Joseph Wright Alsop III (1838–1891) and Elizabeth Winthrop (Beach) Alsop (1847–1889). John Alsop Jr. (1724 – November 22, 1794) was an American merchant and politician from New York City. As a delegate for New York to the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776, he signed the 1774 Continental Association. Early life Alsop was born in 1724 in New Windsor, Orange County in the British Province of New York. He was the son of John Alsop, Sr. and Abigail Sackett. Donald Douglas Alsop (born August 28, 1927) is a senior United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Education and career Alsop was born in Duluth, Minnesota, and served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. He received his Bachelor of Science in Law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1950 and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1952.
