Algoma Central Railway
The Algoma Central Railway is a railway in Northern Ontario, Canada, that operates between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ontario, Hearst. It used to have a branch line to Wawa, Ontario, Wawa. The area served by the railway is sparsely populated, with few roads. The railway is well known for its Agawa Canyon tour train. Until 2015, the line also provided passenger train service to canoeists, snowmobilers, cottagers and tourists accessing this wilderness recreation region. The railway connects at its northernmost point with the Ontario Northland Railway and with CN's eastern division to the south. It also intersects with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City at Franz station, Franz and with the Huron Central Railway at its southernmost point in the Sault. Algoma ( ) is a city in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,243 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Algoma is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. History The Ahnapee settlement, which eventually became known as Algoma, was founded in 1834 by Joseph McCormick of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Manitowoc. In 1851, Ireland, Irish and England, English pioneers moved to the area and called the place ''Wolf River''. The wolf was a legendary animal in stories told by the local Potawatomi Indians. (This animal eventually became the mascot of the Algoma School District, Algoma High School.) In the Menominee language, the town is known as , meaning "snowshoe". Algoma Township is a civil township of Kent County, Michigan, Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 12,055 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, which is a large increase from 9,932 at the 2010 United States census, 2010 census. The township is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about north of the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Grand Rapids. History Algoma was originally settled in 1843. The Algoma Boulevard Historic District is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. History The district features a string of large, elaborate homes, once known as the "Gold Coast" of Oshkosh. Many were built by lumber barons and officers of their companies. Notable examples of different styles are the 1857 Greek Revival Kohlmann house, the 1868 Italianate Anthes house, the 1888 Queen Anne Charles Wood house, the 1897 Shingle-style Ideson-Osborn house, the 1911 Richardsonian Romanesque Moses Hooper house, the 1908 Tudor Revival Sawyer house, the 1911 Colonial Revival Schriber house, the 1917 Wright-designed Prairie Style Hunt house, and the 1926 Mediterranean Revival Converse house. Kewaunee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,563. Its county seat is Kewaunee. The county was created in 1852 and organized in 1859. Its Menominee name is ''Kewāneh'', an archaic name for a species of duck. Kewaunee County is part of the Green Bay, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Green Bay- Shawano, WI Combined Statistical Area. Algoma, Oregon
Algoma is an unincorporated community on the east shore of Upper Klamath Lake, in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The community is approximately north of the city of Klamath Falls on U.S. Route 97. Algoma was named for the Algoma Lumber Company. History In 1909, R. H. Hovey bought of timberland on the east shore of Upper Klamath Lake in Klamath County, Oregon. That was the beginning of the Algoma Lumber Company. In 1912, Hovey built a large sawmill with a capacity to mill 100,000 board-feet (236 m3) of lumber per shift. Since the mill ran two shifts per day, the mill's daily production capacity was 200,000 board-feet (472 m3). The company grew rapidly. By the end of its first year, the mill and its logging operations employed about 200 workers. To accommodate the workforce, the company platted the Algoma townsite. Algoma post office opened in 1912.
