Aitken (crater)
Aitken is a large lunar crater, lunar impact crater that lies on the Far side (Moon), far side of the Moon, named for Robert Grant Aitken, an American astronomer specializing in binary stellar systems. It is located to the southeast of the crater Heaviside (lunar crater), Heaviside, and north of the unusual formation Van de Graaff (crater), Van de Graaff. Attached to the southwest rim is Vertregt (crater), Vertregt. To the southeast is the smaller Bergstrand (crater), Bergstrand. The inner wall of Aitken is Wiktionary: terrace, terraced and varies notably in width with the narrowest portion in the southwest. The crater Aitken  Z lies across the inner north wall. Just to the north of the rim is the small crater Aitken which is surrounded by an ejecta blanket of lighter-albedo material. The interior floor has been resurfaced in the past by a darker lava flow, especially in the southern half. There are also several small crater impacts on the eastern floor, an arcing central ...

South Pole–Aitken Basin
The South Pole–Aitken basin (SPA Basin, ) is an immense impact crater on the far side of the Moon. At roughly in diameter and between deep, it is one of the largest known impact craters in the Solar System. It is the largest, oldest, and deepest basin recognized on the Moon. It is estimated that it was formed approximately 4.2 to 4.3 billion years ago, during the Pre-Nectarian epoch (with radiometric dating of lunar zircons proposed to originate from the basin suggesting a precise age of 4.338 billion years). It was named for two features on opposite sides of the basin: the lunar South Pole at one end and the crater Aitken on the northern end. The outer rim of this basin can be seen from Earth as a huge mountain chain located on the Moon's southern limb, sometimes informally called "Leibnitz mountains". On 3 January 2019, the Chang'e 4, a Chinese spacecraft, landed in the basin, specifically within a crater called Von Kármán.

Aitken Lectureship
The Aitken Lectureship is awarded by the New Zealand Mathematical Society to a research mathematician from New Zealand. The lectureship is named for New Zealander Professor Alexander Aitken, formerly of the University of Edinburgh. The lectureship was funded in 2009 by the London Mathematical Society and the New Zealand Mathematical Society, and is normally awarded every two years, alternating with the Forder Lectureship. Recipients of the lectureship will give a several-week lecturing tour of UK universities and a lecture at the annual meeting of the London society. Recipients The recipients of the Aitken Lectureship are: * 2011: Geoff Whittle * 2013: Robert Mclachlan * 2015: Steven Galbraith * 2017: Hinke Osinga * 2019: Bakh Khoussainov * 2022: Lisa Orloff Clark See also * List of mathematics awards This list of mathematics awards contains articles about notable awards for mathematics. Aitken's Delta-squared Process
In numerical analysis, Aitken's delta-squared process or Aitken extrapolation is a series acceleration method used for accelerating the rate of convergence of a sequence. It is named after Alexander Aitken, who introduced this method in 1926 as part of an extension to Bernoulli's method. It is most useful for accelerating the convergence of a sequence that is converging linearly. A precursor form was known to Seki Kōwa (1642 – 1708) and applied to the rectification of the circle, i.e., to the calculation of π. Definition Given a sequence X = with n = 0, 1, 2, 3, \ldots, Aitken's delta-squared process associates to this sequence the new sequence A = (a_n) = , which can also be written as A = \left( x_n-\frac \right), with \Delta x_= x_-x_ and \Delta^2 x_n=x_n -2x_ + x_=\Delta x_-\Delta x_. Both are the same sequence algebraically but the latter has improved numerical stability in computational implementation. A /math> is ill-defined if the sequence \Delta^2 = (\Delt ...
