Aileu Municipality
Aileu (, ) is a municipality, and was formerly a district, of East Timor. It has a population of 48,554 (Census 2015) and an area of 737 km2. The municipality's capital is also named Aileu. Its administrative posts are Aileu, Laulara, Lequidoe and Remexio. Etymology The word ''Aileu'' means "bent tree" in the local Mambai language. According to legend, the root of a banyan fig tree (''Ficus benghalensis'') grew to maturity without a branch or leaf. The tree developed into a twisted shape that looked like a chair; its unique appearance made it famous, and eventually gave the community its name. Nowadays, the wooden chair is also the symbol of the municipality. Geography Aileu is in the northwestern part of East Timor and is one of only two landlocked municipalities, the other being Ermera. Timor-Leste is ISO 3166-2, divided into 14 municipality, municipalities (, ), which are former districts. One municipality is also a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The municipalities are divided into administrative posts of Timor-Leste, administrative posts (former subdistricts), and further subdivided into sucos of Timor-Leste, sucos (villages). Atauro, Atauro Island was initially a part of Dili Municipality, but became a separate municipality on 1 January 2022. The borders between Cova Lima and Ainaro and between Baucau and Viqueque were changed in 2003. Liquiçá Municipality
Liquiçá (, ) is one of the municipalities of East Timor, municipalities (formerly districts) of East Timor. Its capital is also called Liquiçá. Etymology The English language name of the municipality has been said to be a Portuguese approximation of the old name ''Liku Saen'', which means 'Pythonidae, python' in the local Tokodede language, or the corresponding portmanteau ''Likusaen''. Another theory points to the Tokodede expression ''Likis Aá'', meaning 'motion' or 'change', referring to an incident during the founding of the city of Vila de Liquiçá. After the Portuguese had chosen the settlement site, people started clearing the forest there and turning it into an open space. The Portuguese then asked the local people to tell them the name of the area. The local people did not understand the question, and so the Portuguese tried to communicate with gestures by moving their hands back and forth. Ainaro Municipality
Ainaro (, ) is one of 13 municipalities of East Timor, municipalities of East Timor, in the southwest part of the country. It has a population of 59,175 (census 2010) and an area of 804 km2. Its capital is the city of Ainaro, a small mountain town. Etymology The name of the municipality is derived from 'Ai Naruk', the local Mambai language (Timor), Mambai language word for "tall tree", and refers to a species of tree that grows in the region. ''Ainaro'' is a Portuguese approximation of ''Ainaru'', the Mambai and Tetum derivation. The traditional name of the region, 'Orluli', is still used today by during ceremonies, such as the ''sergala'', to greet important guests. Manufahi Municipality
Manufahi (, ) is one of the municipalities of East Timor. It has a population of 53,691 (2015 census) and an area of 1,323 km2. The capital of the municipality is Same. Etymology The present name of the municipality, ''Manufahi'', is derived from ''Maun Fahe'', the Tetum language expression for 'divided brothers'. The name originated in a legend that tells of a fight between two related tribes, or a group of siblings. Eventually, the protagonists agreed to subject themselves to a single ruler. During the Portuguese colonial era, the then district bore the name of its main town, Same. The present name was adopted on the basis of the divided brothers legend. Manatuto Municipality
Manatuto (, ) is one of the municipalities (formerly districts) of East Timor, located in the central part of the country. It has a population of 45,541 (Census 2010) and an area of 1,783.3 km2. The capital of the municipality is also named Manatuto. It is the least populated municipality of East Timor. Etymology The word ''Manatuto'' has been said to be a Portuguese approximation of the local Tetum and Galoli language word ''Manatutu'', which means 'pecking birds'. According to another source, the word is a portmanteau of the Tetum words ''Mana'' and ''tutu'', which mean 'old woman' and 'peak' or 'summit', respectively. Dili Municipality (, ) is one of the 14 Municipalities of East Timor, municipalities, formerly districts, of Timor-Leste, and includes the national capital Dili. The municipality had a population of 277,279 , most of whom live in the capital city. Etymology Several explanations have been proffered for the origin of the municipality's name. Ermera Municipality
Ermera (, ) is one of the municipalities (formerly districts) of East Timor, located in the west-central part of the country. It has a population of 117,064 (Census 2010) and an area of 756.5 km2. Etymology The word ''Ermera'' means 'red water' in the local Mambai language. It is said that the ancestors of today's inhabitants of the municipality originated from three mountains, namely Cailitlau, Lalimlau, and Hituria, and that the name ''Ermera'' refers to the red waters flowing from those mountains. Geography Ermera is one of only two land-locked municipalities in East Timor, the other being Aileu.
