Aesopus (gastropod)
''Aesopus'' is a genus of sea snails, marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusks in the family (biology), family Columbellidae, the dove snails. Description (Original description in Latin) The animal is white with a sole that is emarginate anteriorly and obtuse posteriorly, featuring a flabelliform horny cover. It has a small head with external medial eyes and a wide, very short siphon. The shell is fusiform and humpbacked, with a widely truncated anterior. The lunate Aperture (mollusc), aperture has its posterior corner filled with callus. The Columella (gastropod), columella is simple and vitreous, while the suture near the aperture is abnormally arched. The backward angle and downward curvature of the body whorl are quite peculiar. The form and appearance of the shell, along with the structure of the animal, suggest that it occupies an intermediate position between the genera Mitra (gastropod), Mitra and Columbella. Species Species within the genus ''Aesopus'' include: * ''A ...

Augustus Addison Gould
Augustus Addison Gould (April 23, 1805 – September 15, 1866) was an American naturalist and the foremost conchologist of his era. He described over 1,100 new species of mollusks, including all known mollusks of Massachusetts and the shells collected by two major government exploring expeditions. He was one of the first naturalists in America to recognize the importance of geographic distribution in the description of species. Biography Born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, he was the son of music teacher Nathaniel Duren Gould (1781–1864) who was also noted for his penmanship. Physician He graduated from Harvard College in 1825, and took his degree of doctor of medicine in 1830. "Establishing himself in Boston, he devoted himself to the practice of medicine, and finally rose to high professional rank and social position. He became president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, and was employed in editing the vital statistics (government records), vital statistics of the state ...

Aesopus Chrysalloideus
''Aesopus chrysalloideus'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Columbellidae, the dove snails. Description The length of the shell attains 12.5 mm, its diameter 4.5 mm. (Described as † ''Aesopus idae'') The conical shell is very elongate, increasing regularly in size. The specimen has seven remaining whorls, with the extreme tip missing. The whorls of the protoconch are decollated. The teleoconch whorls are relatively high between the sutures, with a narrowly tabulated shoulder at the summit. The whorls are marked by irregular, retractively slanting growth lines, which are accentuated in the type specimen due to weathering of the specimen. Although there are indications of sculpture on the spire, the specimen is too worn to confirm this detail. The base is protracted, with the anterior portion marked by the continuation of strong growth lines and indications of robust spiral lirations. The aperture is oval and distinctly channeled anteriorly, w ...

Aesopus Japonicus
''Aesopus japonicus'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Columbellidae, the dove snails. Description The length of the shell attains 7 mm, its diameter 2 mm. The shell is small, solid, and chestnut-colored, with a paler area near the suture. It is characterized by rolling striae and has seven tumid whorls with rear plications. The body whorl is oval and broadly truncated, comprising about three-fifths of the total shell length. The shell features a lunate aperture and a columella that is reflexively covered with a wide, glass-like plate. This very distinct genus, both as to shell and animal. The base is traversed by sharp transverse ridges, passing over the columella into the aperture. The broad and short tentacles, the position of the eyes, and the long, obtuse foot of the animal, are quite peculiar. Distribution This marine species occurs in the Kagoshima Bay, Japan as well as off the coast of the Philippines. References External links Co ...

Aesopus Jaffaensis
''Aesopus jaffaensis'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Columbellidae, the dove snails. Description The length of the shell attains 5.9 mm, its diameter 2.2 mm. (Original description) The shell is cylindrically fusiform with a blunt protoconch consisting of one and a half subconvex, smooth whorls, ending abruptly with a scar. The teleoconch has four subconvex whorls with distinct, subcanaliculate sutures. These sutures are very narrowly marginate and ascend near the aperture. The body whorl is oval and is somewhat compressed at the base. The aperture is oval, narrowing posteriorly, with a wide, notched siphonal canal. The outer lip is thin, simple, and slightly excavated in the infractural area. The columella is curved and obtusely angled at the sinistrally directed canal. The surface of the shell is smooth, except for minute sublenticular axial and longitudinal crowded scratches.

Description The length of the shell attains 13 mm, its diameter 3.3 mm. (Original description) The shell is smooth, slender, and elongate, with inconspicuous sutures and approximately eight whorls. The protoconch is defective and smooth, while the subsequent whorls gradually increase in size and are moderately convex. The shell's color is greenish-waxen with dark chestnut flammules, so arranged on the body whorl as to form two irregular bands: one above and one below the periphery. These bands are also visible inside the aperture and on the base of the columella. The paler surface of the shell is irregularly mottled with opaque whitish blotches. The aperture is short and relatively wide, with a simple, sharp, and smooth outer lip. Both the body and columella are smooth, with a thin layer of callus. The siphonal canal is short, wid ...
